Hi Guys, Which bolt on the bell housing is normally used for the battery ground? My 1989 351w has the battery ground on the raw water pump bracket on the timing cover, which I don't think is the normal place. Thanks,
Greg |

That sounds like the normal location to me.
It made for a shorter negative cable to the battery, which was a good thing electrically and as an added bonus it kept the bean counters happy since a shorter cable was cheaper You can ground that cable anywhere on the block since it's one big hunk of cast iron

Thanks Keno. I just read on the PCM Engine manual that one of the bell housing bolts is longer for the ground connection. 15 .... RS0328 ....U .. Bolt, Flywheel Housing To Block 7/16 18x 1 1/4"
15 .... RS0329 ....U .. Bolt, Flywheel Housing To Block 7/16 18 x 1 1/2" For Ground Cable |

Back in 1989 PCM was supplying engines to a number of different boat companies and they hooked the ground to the block in a place that was convenient for them.
CC put it where they wanted to, just like for example Supra put it where they wanted to (in a different spot) If the spot at the front worked for the last at least 15 years that you've had the boat, whether or not you think it's original why not keep it there. Like mentioned earlier anywhere works. Maybe somebody will post a picture of their 80's mounting location in a 351 Ski Nautique, That cable is pretty camera shy unless it accidentally shows up in a picture of something else.

Agree with Ken, if you have a cable in decent condition with a clean mounting point pretty much anywhere, then that ground will never be your electrical issue.

Thanks Guys. Cables are all good. Just trying to rebuild everything as close to original as possible While the engine is out, I'm going to try to tidy up the wiring in the bilge too. |
