I recently test drove the 1980 Martinique that I'm hopefully going to buy. The mechanic that's getting the engine ready said I didn't need a water strainer. Is this right? Any help would be great. Thanks.

The water strainer is a good thing it helps keep things like leaves,pine needles ,trash from cloging your transmission cooler and restricting water flow into the raw water pump (the Sherwood pump with rubber impeller) I change my imepller every season and keep a spare in the boat, very easy and inexpensive item that can cause engine damage very quickly . I love the 1980 Martinique

I'd love to see those photos too. 1980 is the first year of the bigger Martinique. My '78 is the same hull as the Nautique (with a different deck). I hope things go well with the purchase - post photos to the Diaries Section.

The boat has a 351. It now has a new carb., new distibuter, new drive shaft and sounds great. The floor is rotten and has to be replaced. The vinyl is in terrible shape also. As soon as I put the new floor in I'm going to recarpet and recover everything. The seats are shot and the back bench is MIA. I'll try to rebuild it by looking at the brochure. I talked to Woody at SE and I think I may buy some new Nautique seats for the front. Any suggestions? As far as photos go, maybe I can do a before/after thing. I'll definately post pictures as is.(A little rough right now.)

I would install the strainer. It's cheap insurance. I didn't use one for a couple of years then I replaced the engine and one day I got back in a mossy area and sucked up a bunch of junk that got cloged in the tranny cooler and the temp started climbing. When I got back to the house the strainer was installed and any time I see a change in the temp gauge it is cleaned.

Tate,
My Nautique has always had a strainer and I have never had a problem. I am however amused at how much stuff I find in the strainer. Strainers are cheap, the potential cost of a repair resulting in "stuff" getting through is large. Add the strainer. |
