Making progress, Sides are completely installed and finished up the transom as well. Started installing wood plugs, That is a miserable, time consuming job but it has to get done to move forward. Also got one coat of paint on the inside of the boat, I'm going to wait to do a second coat until all the mechanical work is roughed in. I'm a little behind with the engine as I'm still waiting for the stroker kit to come in, could be several months before I have a powerplant to drop in and start fitting. I also have a transmission to rebuild so I'm really behind on mechanicals. I really wanted to do all my fitting before I installed the deck but I don't want lose momentum so I'll start laying the deck out next

Amazing skills, this is really fun to watch! We saw the movie "The Boys in the Boat" a month or so ago. Really enjoyed the movie, but I mention it because one character is the older gent that is making the wooden rowing shells, not that they show much detail but it does give you a sense of the care and skill it took to make a competitive boat.

I’m from a family where we grew up on a lake, grew up with
wooden boats, grew up with two generations of craftsmen before me, my dad and
my grandfather. Continuing that hands-on
experience to my son and daughter. Yes, we need to continue the beautiful traditions
of the old ways or it will be lost. Even
repairing gelcoat takes skills and patience. Enjoy watching this project getting closer to being finished. To the yesterday's men and women out there! |

Installed strake #5 today and steam bent strakes 6&7. If I can put 2 days together next week I'll have both sides installed and then a quick holiday break. Transom is next.
30 minutes in the steam box and clamp it in place. |

one side down one to go. It won't look sexy until I start shaping it in but this is by far the best of the three boats I've done ....so far!

Sorry to hear you were still battling Corvid last summer. Have a nephew that was doing the same last summer. It will take a while to build your strength back to where you were before. Glad to hear you’re back at it on the boat. You’re moving right along even though it may be a slower pace. Keep it up, it will be better!

Glad to see some progress on the boat going again and that you seem to be back on the mend. Getting Old ain't for sissies! Just start doing laps around the hood backwards like you're bride and you'll be back in shape before you know it. 40lb loss? I'm sure your knees appreciate it. Tou'll be back on a stick this spring.

Overdue for an update but I have a good reason this time. I mentioned a few pages ago that I have been dealing with some Covid related Auto immune issues and Although I was feeling pretty good this spring I slowly started to go downhill again over the summer. Started feeling lousy, lost 40 lbs and just felt tired all the time, one evening I got a fever, my BP dropped and so did I. I woke up on a gurney on the way to the emergency room. Long story short, I spent 5 days in the hospital and a good 5-6 weeks recovering from a serious blood infection but I once again feel great. Not how I wanted to drop 4" off my waistline but I do look pretty good right now!
On to the boat, Started planking a couple of weeks ago and making some good progress. This type of work is kicking my butt as I lost a lot of strength but doing anything physical right now is good for me. I'm hurting at the end of the day good it's a good hurt. Four strakes installed on the port side, strake five and above will need steaming so that will slow me down a little. Taking the extra time to get my plank joints real nice and am very happy with the results so far. I'm going to start a new thread about the engine as I have some rebuilding questions. I spent a lot of time fairing out the plywood sides, that is really helping with getting good results with the planking |

Quick update, should start moving along quicker once the weather turns and I spend more than 1 day a week on it.
Bilge got one coat of paint and I started installing the inner plywood sides. One side is complete and have begun filling/fairing it out. Using a Total Boat epoxy fairing compound from Jamestown instead of mixing my own and I really like it. Simple 1:1 mix and it stays on vertical surfaces very well. |

Beautiful Guitar, Alan. Sorry to hear you were ill. Hopefully, the shots paid off on the other end and you didn't get covid. Good deal for you and Dana selling the business. Happy retirement!

Damn Bro. Sorry to hear that you've been ill BECAUSE of that "Vaccine"! More and more I've heard more folks having serious health issues because of that shot. Next door neighbor still having issues because of it.
Congrats on selling the Biz. I know y'all been wanting to sell it for awhile. Hope this doesn't mean the end of the Throw-Back T-Shirts. As far as the Collegian goes... You'd better get busy Magic. After July 20th You've got nothing keeping you in Illinois so It'll be time to load up the RV and everything else and head southeast to longer ski seasons, no white stuff and acloser to the Grand Youngins. Nice work on the Guitar. Wouldn't expect anything different from a master craftsman. Mayby you shoulda kept it and learn a few chords yourself. Guitar players always attracts the ladies but the Drummers Always gets the chicks. Huh Paul??

Sorry to hear about the health issues and I'm sure the business issues were stressful as well, so glad all that is behind you. So last day is July 20. The timing of that is just about right to get the house sold and get moved down here to God's country. You/we know you miss Quinner.

Well that's a scare for sure glad to hear your on the mend. You both certainly deserve a well earned rest. Projects are looking good but here is a tip - get as much done as you can before you retire in July, you will have less time to do things than you did when you were working. Can't explain it just is. Good luck to you both on your next chapter

I also took on a small "warm up" wood working project to get me back on my feet and in the mood. To add to the amp I put together for my son a few years ago I built a Baritone Fender guitar for him. That was fun but a luthier I'm not. It's in his hands now and he's finishing the assembly and electronics.
I'd like to take credit for the neck because it is absolutely beautiful but we purchased it pre made, the body is all I did. Fun warm up exercise and I'm ready to get back at the boat in August, promise to update regularly. enjoy |

Been a long time since I've made an update, lot's of reasons and changes so to make a very long story short here goes.
I've actually been fairly sick for about 18 months, I had an auto immune reaction to the Covid vaccine and it made for a miserable year and a half. It confounded 3 doctors as they performed just about every test under the sun to get me diagnosed. In the end they feel that as my immunity started to wane my symptoms did also and over the last 3-4 weeks I'm really feeling good again. Started working out regularly and am getting back on a ski this weekend, it's been too long. The other issue due to a lot of factors is we sold Action Screen Print back in January of this year. That process was exhausting when not at 100% but we got it done and couldn't be happier. We are both still working at the business but my last day of full time work will be July 20th. The boat hasn't moved in quite a while, I did manage to get the bottom painted and it will get flipped over as soon as I "retire". This is where it's at right now. |
