So I have all the deck plywood installed and started laying out the pattern for the planking. I ended up making a 20’ straight edge by laminating some 1/4” plywood strips together. Used that to lay out the planking plan and will use it as a router guide for cutting the deck seams.
Also steam bent the piece that goes across the deck at the transom, I think that’s the last time we’ll need the steamer on this on. I ended up rebuilding the dash as the old one had been altered from the original gauge layout quite severely and repairing all the holes was going to be more work than fitting a piece new piece. Here’s the fore deck layout, the deck had been replaced by the previous owner and what they put back was not even close to the correct pattern. From what few photos I could find 1956 had a one year only deck pattern and had a nice alternating staining between blonde and the red mahogany. That will become more apparent as I gel the decking installed. |

Retirement looks to be really rough and hard on you Alan. Keeping busy is the secret to a long and healthy one. Fabulous work as always. She's gonna be a Purty Boat. Any thoughts on a name for her?

Started building the engine bay hatch. I altered the framework just a bit to try to get me some more height for clearance to the flame arrestor. The old y block that came out had side draft carbs but the 302 going in has a typical 4 barrel and needs more height than the old hatch design could offer, my measurements show it’s still going to be real close. If the hatch doesn’t close we’ll figure it out when we get there.

Few more shots of today’s progress.
Figured it was time to quit for the day when I tried to install the last piece of plywood upside down onto fresh 5200 and made a mess. |

Hatch planking just needs a little more fine tuning and it’s ready to be fastened down.

Nice solution for the engine height! Looks like if it were engineered from the factory. Great work.

Thanks for the compliments.
Fitted the bow deck inserts and shaped the hatch cover. Next up will be the cover boards that run the length of the boat, been avoiding them because I think they’re going to be a challenge. Very happy with the hatch, I decided to try something and it worked out very well. Once I built the hatch frame I shimmed it in place to set the gaps then installed and shaped the decking in long pieces that run all the way to the transom. Now that its complete I’ll cut it free from the rear deck and end up with a perfect deck seams and gap. I didn’t do this on the Hurricane and I spent a ton of time and effort trying to get that hatch to look good and was never really happy with it, this process worked out great. |

Got the outer cover boards fitted.
I’ll get these permanently installed and finish shaping them then get to work on the rest of the infill decking

Well it’s rained 3 days this week so lots of progress.
All that’s left on the deck is the infill on the bow. Got everything glued down today. Cut the engine hatch free also, very pleased with the way that worked out. Everything lines up very nice. I was able to find some very nice wide mahogany so the rear deck pieces are actually done in a single piece. Resawn and book matched on each side of the hump. That area will be blond and should look nice. I’ve made a few mistakes along the way but always find a way to recover. 😊

Other than building the rubrail the woodworking phase is done. Taking a week off to visit the grandkids then back at it for final sanding.

The precision with every detail is so impressive! I'm noticing something not boat-related. I went back to look at some of the early posts on this boat, your discovery of expected issues and unexpected ones like the bottom being oil saturated. As I read and looked at pictures, I noticed the same bike with the same black drawstring bag hung high on the starboard wall. You need to take a break and go for a bike ride!

Called in some help today from the Sunday Drive crew. Renee and Evan came up to help Dana and I get the boat stained. Got a few small touch ups to do as I missed a few scratches that the dark stain exposes but it came out pretty good. The blonde color is a little yellowish but will turn to more of a gold as we get varnish on it.
