Got this 84 and need to winterize it, maybe without starting the engine.
When i picked it up we had trouble getting it to idle, vacuum gauge swung up and down.

The pvc hose was laying on the intake manifold behind the carb and the port was capped.
I thought that was the issue.
When cleaning the boat oit i seen the other port on the intake manifold and realized it had a huge vacuum leak when we were running it.

Who knows how old the gas is but i pulled out 15 gallons so far and the truck is burning it, or   how clogged the carb etc.
The alternator isn't throwing a charge and not knowing wether that could throw off the engine running or not but it revved up strong so i bought it for the donor motor in the waterlogged 96.

The top port was plugged. I pulled the plug and hooked the vacuum gauge to it.
The bottom port was wide open, and we never noticed it.

All 8 plugs look the same, no oil, water, rust, same color and burn to the same place on the electrodes.
So may or may not run to winterize, and don't know if i want to fool with it right now.

What i need is the best way to winterize it with 50/50 without running it.
It's going into storage in northeast ohio until next summer.

Click on the link below for some info with pictures

2 block drains (one under #8 cylinder and one under #1 cylinder), 2 exhaust manifold drains, J tube drain, transmission cooler and suction strainer.

Make sure water comes out of each, or probe the hole with something to get any rust, corrosion out so the water drains


RV anti freeze works just fine  ( It turns solid but doesn't freeze hard enough to bust anything)

Take the thermostat cover off, take the thermostat out and pour it into the housing.

Some people fill the engine, some pour in a gallon or so to mix with any residual water, some drain the antifreeze back out and leave it dry, some just leave it dry with no antifreeze ever put in.

Lots of variations on what people do and their way is always the best for them Wink

Ill go over the link and take pics of what/how i do it so if theres a mistake it will hopefully get caught and remedied so i don't lose an engine.

Back on winterize, removed the alternator to clean all connections and photograph for i.d. since it wasn't throwing a charge when bought. The wiring harness from the alternator to coil and into the harness up by the coil is absolutely untouched and original.

The only cut wire is on the ballast because it got electric ignition at some point

So it wasn't charging and mike at ski world said the coil felt hot in his opinion, unsure if it has the correct coil for the electronic ignition upgrade.

I was dumping 4-5 gallons into the truck before filling it up (25 gal tank) and there was no issue.

I have since discovered that the gas in the boa tank does burn paper but the lawnmower won't run on it and it really looks watery- the last 5 gallons so i bought a filter some hose b12 stabil, fogging oil and 2 gallons of non meth recreational 90 octane to start the engine off the aux tank and maybe time, idle adjust etc before winterizing it just for peace of mind that it's a good engine.

It started raining so it had to get closed up maybe tomorrow i can finish the set up and give it a whirl plus more pics.

Meantime;
will it run correctly without charging ?
Seeing the heater, hot shower, heated seat threads, can i or do i need a bigger alternator to accomodate those 3 options ?
Or would said options require a house battery ?
Can't believe i'm seriously considering options past the radio.

For what you're doing, the engine will run without an alternator. It'll run for quite a while (like hours and hours) before dragging down battery voltage enough that the ignition system quits working.

Alternator is a  Motorola with an internal regulator, maybe 37 amps. That was the original alternator in 84
