So I’m back haha dumb questions incoming put on your helmets…

I have a 14x11 iirc prop boat hops up out of the hole doesn’t seem to struggle even with a load but seems like wide open only 23-2500rpm showing on the tach. (Could my tach be broken?)

To me seems like that’s low,

Whats a pcm 351 suppose to turn wot

How do I check I’m getting full wot on the carb??

I was cruisings around 23-25mph at 2000ish rpm until we decided to try and wot to see what we could top out at and only got it to 30mph and engine sounded like it was revving higher than tach was showing but what do I know.

I can’t open engine box while running at speed since it’s inside the cabin and it can’t be removed without taking the whole back wall off the boat wish I remembered how to post pictures on this site

You could get a timing light with the rpm feature to find out if your rpm guage is not correct.

I am no expert but I would guess 4500-5000 for average WOT

That SBF should be able to cruise at 3,800 to 4,000 RPMs all day long.  I agree that a timing light with a tachometer is a great tool. 

Assuming a 4-BBL carb, at WOT, both throttle plates (butterflies) should be vertical.  Someone will have to be operating the helm while you are looking down the throat of the carb. 

If you have too much prop, the load on the engine is disproportionate for the RPM. Again assuming a 4-BBL Holley carb with the right prop, you can determine where the secondaries open.  Then just stay below that throttle setting for cruising with optimum fuel efficiency.  I realize this isn’t what you asked, but there you are…

I wish I could post a picture so you guys can see what I’m working with room wise i don’t think I can use the timing light idea. Rpm’s look sound and calculate correct up until the top end of the spectrum. The 14x11 seems to be the factory prop for my boat.

I was looking over videos to check and I found one where we are going 24 gps speed with tach showing 2k rpm

Punching that into a prop calculator shows a boat going 24mph with a 1:1 ratio at 2k rpm with 10% slip pitch would be 14x14.

Soooo my rpm have to be off or this props been worked :shrug:

If only you bought that timing light/tach so you could have figured out that your tach is wrong a while ago and maybe even checked your timing and timing advance Wink

It'll work for what you need to do even with your setup

You can check timing and timing advance in neutral and you can check RPM with the tach lead hooked to any plug wire with no need to aim the light at anything. You can have the light outside the engine compartment where you can read RPM's while it's being driven.

Haha I actually didn’t remember posting about it before with all the issues I had with the trans n stuff

I didnt order one since I don’t know how to mess with any of that stuff engine hatch can’t be raised while running and it’s heavy a cable would get cut off I’d bet

That's what a couple pieces of scrap wood are handy for

You lift the hatch and slide the wood under and set the hatch back down with clearance for the timing light wire

In our younger days we just used empty beer cans for the engine hatch prop.  We were just ahead of our time and didn't know you could have a boat with heat for those cold days.   Who woulda thunk?

It’s not a ski boat so propping The engine box open doesn’t really work if you wish to operate the boat the box is at the helm and if you prop it open you now will have to stand outside at the rail of the boat to operate the controls along with if the box slides back since it isn’t hooked on to anything it will take off the carb and flame arrestor since we aren’t in a flat calm lake out here in the ocean…

So......you're trying to say that you can't prop this thing up about 1/4 of an inch so that the timing light cable going to your choice of spark plugs can be used to check your RPM's while you're driving without squishing that cable?

Sorry keno, I was replying to the super helpful mind blowing comment below yours I will look into the tach wire engine hatch propping I just don’t know about how I’ll go about having the whole thing up if it’s not advancing (tach on dash reading close to timing light as suggested) or to check other possibilities.

Not really sure how the advancing or any of that works but I’m currently in my second semester of YouTube university on the subject and should be graduating soon…

Get some 12 volt wire and 4 aligator clips, the length you will have to determine.
The wire will let you close the hatch and be long enough to set the multimeter on the dash.

Per the book that came with my multi meter or i wouldn't know how to do it.
Hook the red wire to the neg side of the coil.
Hook the black wire to the block/ground.
Connect your multimeter set to rpm and go for a boat ride.

Now the above is helpful (with a meter that has a frequency function) but it's kinda sorta pretty much impossible to check your timing with a multimeter Wink

Knowing where your initial timing is and being able to watch it advance as RPMs go up, is fairly important in the overall scheme of having a good running engine.

Remember.......you can check timing in neutral sitting on the trailer so you don't have to worry about those  nasty ocean waves

It may not be the easiest thing to do on your boat, but it's something you'll eventually need to do.

PS ....You could spend a little time and figure out how to post pictures. Here's one way that's free and easy using IMGBB after you watch the You Tube video

You might have to spend another semester or 2 at You Tube University though Wink

Yes please try the picture posting.  We would like to see the boat as well as how the engine cover is such a big obstacle.  I looked at the somewhat limited brochures from that era and came up empty.   A timing light with the rpm function seems much easier than the multi meter.

My bad, i thought this was an rpm thread;
i read 14x11 pops outta the whole but tach only goes 2500. To me, Propped right, tachs off !
Didn't know about the timing issue.

Yes posting pictures is very easy they are worth a thousand words when it comes to articulating step by step instructions and for getting help/answers especially when the recipient may not be mechanically or electrically inclined but a genious down other avenues.

(my neighbor works on electrical doo hickeys for the space program) so smart and yet would rebuild the mother board in the mr coffee before thinking to see if it was plugged in.

Didn't know there was a timing light with a tach on it to solve/verify your issues either but if keno's got your troubleshooting figured out then your getting advice from the top of the food chain.

Hard to believe there isn't a way to hook it up close the hatch and read it even if someone has to go down there and read it, like my dad says " that's why we had you boys"

I clicked the links (but i didn't read) more of a wait for the movie type.
Sea nautique not fish nautique, i see how the seat is over the engine.
There has to be a way to thread the clips from a timing light thru an air vent or other access for wires and cables etc making less than ideal but it has to be done.

If you have no help buy some clamps to hold the timing light with tach function and your cell phone to get a video you can rewatch and post to get this sorted out.

We all figure his tach is reading way too low.

Nobody knows if there's a timing issue, but I just figure it's good to know what the timing is and right now he doesn't know but when he's done with YouTube University, he'll probably figure that a combo timing light/tach is a good tool to have Wink

Unfortunately due to time constraints I had to drop out of YTU right before graduation…

I will try and get some pictures uploaded to show the cramped access and unstable/unsafe hatch to prop open while underway.

My mechanic suggested the tach might be in an incorrect setting on the back, I will check that next time I get the chance along with the timing light/tach combo to check timing since keno thinks it’s worth noting
