So I’m waiting for my seam caulking to set up so I can get back to varnishing and I don’t have the block back from the machine shop yet so I decided to do something completely different today.

This boat has a lot of solid backed rubrail trim on it.  It is  chrome plated bronze and was pretty beat up and all needed to be rechromed.  Problem is I couldn’t find anyone that could handle 12’ lengths.  My only option was to cut everything down to 6’ pieces and I just didn’t want to do that.  Plus my chrome guy wanted $100 per 6’ piece to rechrome, that would have been about 16 pieces which just sounded outrageous.

I ended up finding a supplier in Michigan that could get me polished stainless steel rubrail pre drilled and countersunk for less than half the cost of the rechrome.  Problem is I would have to learn how bend it around the bow and rear rubrails.  Once again YouTube came to my rescue and I gave it a shot today.

First i needed to make a buck in the radius of the rails out of wood.  I then lined it with 1/8” steel to protect the wood from the torch while heating the stainless.  Once it got red hot it actually formed around the buck fairly easily.  Then I rounded the ends and polished them and the bends to get the scorching out.   This was actually much easier than i thought it would be and the stainless looks very close to chrome so I’m very happy with it.

Test fitted everything and then put it aside ready to install when varnish is complete.it will all get a final run across the buffing wheel before install.

Exactly what I use YouTube for... Learning. (Either that or watch skilled craftsmen build things).
The famous proverb "you learn something every day" at work.

And they really look the part Alan.
In the end you can call it a small upgrade from the chromed ones (even if Pete is gonna whine about it not being original LOL ).

Awesome as usual!  Of the many stainless products available, one of the best (esp. on new ss) is Nevr-Dull polishing 'wad'. Easy to use and producing near-chrome lustre.

Perfectamundo (which is "good job kid" in italian) every time tried to clamp and bend it came out garbaggio ( which is italian for "the trash") did you re heat the metal after the bend was complete or is that not neccessary in this case?

Could you attach a link to the stainless rubrail supplier along with method and products you used to polish?

Used a torch with map gas, heat til cherry red where you want it to bend.  Once it’s red it will do whatever you want it to,just need to be patient and wait until it’s ready.

No need to reheat after unless you’re trying to fix a kink, I had one that I used a brass mallet to fix but it went back into shape very nicely.
Polisher is a harbor freight bench mount and green polishing bar.  The green bar is for hard metals like stainless.  To shape the ends i used a hand held grinder with an 80 grit flap disk then a metal file and finally 120 grit sandpaper on a random orbit sander.  From that right to the polisher.   It takes about 10 minutes from start to finish to round over and Polish an end.

Supplier ishttp://marineind.net/    Problem is shipping cost which  was actually more than the cost of the trim.  They are only 5 hours from me so we did a road trip and picked it up.   They have a facility in TN as well as MI.

Thanks, good instructions. 10 minutes see that would take me the whole day. I have a bunch of those polishing bars from hf, polishing anything specially metal has always been lack luster for me and every tool i got scratches the material leaving everypiece sub par

So not only are you a Master Carpenter but a pretty damn good Sheet Metal Man. Approve Retirement is treating you well. I love Harbor Freight for cheap tools at low low prices that you're only gonna use once or once in a blue moon. The $60 buffer I bought has buffed my 3  boats twice and a bad oxidized neighbors 88'. Unless you have a brass magnet, the stainless is same same as original. To quote Hollywood, stainless is solider.

Another plus for the stainless is if it gets scuffed or scrathed you can just pull it off the boat and buff it right back.  Win win.

Ps. Update,  I am wet sanding the final coat of varnish.

Pss. I hate wet sanding Confused

You’re already a fabricator and the skills just keep getting better! Seems you already been down this road before of thinking outside the box.

Final varnish coat #17 went on, thought I would try to contain the dust by building a temporary booth.   Worked ok but varnish take so long to loose its tack that the finish was still full of dust.  I was trying to avoid wet sanding and buffing but that didn’t work out

Started wet sanding with 1500 but it wasn’t cutting so had to back down to 1000, then 1500 and 2000.  Exhausting.   After that I cut it with a 3m light compound and finally a polishing compound.   That was 3 days worth of work and I still have the engine hatch to finish up but the results are impressive.

Today I decided to give my arms, hands and shoulders a break so I installed some rubrail.  Nice to see some real positive results.

Tomorrow the plan is to finish the engine hatch then the next step would be to paint the stripes and start installing deck hardware.

Sorry no matter how I flip that image it displays like this. Confused

Still waiting for the cut water and transom bands to come in but I think  they are close.
