Hey Everyone,
I have a couple questions regarding gelcoat restoration and painting with gelcoat. I have a white 1972 Skier. 1. Is the original white color on the Skier hull a pure white you would buy from any gelcoat seller? I have recently painted the floor gelcoat white and it looks to be a brighter white than the hull and bottom. Is my hull just faded? The original color seems to be a creme color or off- white. Are people coloring matching? 2. How have other Correct Craft owners restored their boat's hull gelcoat? I brought my boat to a fiberglass company and he basically stated that the cost would be thousands and thousands of dollars and not even worth it. The hull on my boat isn't too bad. There are 4-6 spots with spider cracks, some good scratches, and the hull needs a good polishing/waxing. 3. What are the goals of most Correct Craft owners in terms of restoring the hull? 4. Do people paint their boats with something other than gelcoat? Thanks for the advice and suggestions! |

I have done two boats...one was a 78 Ski Tique with white gel and yellow/black lettering. It had scratches and spiders and we compounded and polished and the white came out well. It is not perfect but good looking post work. Some have to sand too but more than likely for white, you can heavy duty compound, polish and wax and be happy. Matching white is tough! So I would think twice before grinding spiders and scratches unless they are not seen (on the hull bottom). Sanding a scratch and then doing the above process gets it looking good from 5 feet. See my thread http://www.correctcraftfan.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40614&title=new-to-me-78-tique for pics and discussion. Your hull is prob faded but also, the white used by factory was not bright white. It was a little off. Others can chime in on the color. We tried to match in some places and we had to tint the white with some yellow I recall.
The other boat was orange and the gel didn't cooperate. We did a full regel of the hull. Lots of work to sand down and $ to re-gel and then lots of work to polish. We compounded and polished the white top deck and doghouse, and again, the white really came back well. I would try that first for sure. All products and steps used are detailed in the threads.
