Her are some questions for ya'

1) If you're looking at the engine from in front of it, do the pulleys rotate clockwise toward the passenger side of the boat or counterclockwise toward the drivers side.

2) If you have the transmission in neutral and you shift the throttle to Forward does the lever(with the yellow arrow pointing at it) on the transmission move toward the front of the boat or toward the back of the boat

3) Looking at the picture below, do you have a RH rotation prop or a LH rotation prop

You have to answer all 3 questions, no fair answering only 1 or 2   Wink

Based on your answers, you have an engine with normal automotive rotation in the boat.

Being an 86. it would have originally had a backwards rotating engine that would make your boat go forward when it was shifted to forward. with the prop you have now.

Your engine and transmission in the boat now are normal rotation and you need a LH prop instead of the RH prop that's on the boat.

With the LH prop, the boat will go forward when you shift it into forward.

There are other more difficult solutions like rebuilding the engine to be reverse rotation or replacing the engine with a reverse rotation engine but they get kinda pricey.

There's nothing you can do to your transmission to make it reverse the direction of engine rotation when it's in Forward and have the transmission last.

So the easiest solution is putting a LH rotating prop on the boat and seeing how it runs. Wink

It sounds like you bought somebody's "not quite finished" project boat.

Some people will say that you need a reverse rotation engine or the boat will lean too much to the driver's side if you're alone with no passenger(s)

Sounds to me like your throttle cable is broken or the brass connector that hooks the cable to the throttle lever is broken or fell off the back of the throttle assembly.

With it disconnected from the carburetor, if you move the throttle you should see the end move and when you pull the throttle back, the end should move back again.

I don't think anybody will tell you it's a good idea to run it forward on the reverse clutches  Kinda unpredictable how long things would last.

Got anybody you can borrow a LH prop from to see how it runs before forking over the bucks for a new one?
