Good morning,
Yes the 40A.
Do not be afraid 0f the 80A it has all the same internal components as a 71/72 c velvet drive. Dim and Nautique parts sell seal kits and clutch packs for the 80. the only problem with the 80 is that upon overwhelming request from techs and owners is that PCM refuses to put together any type of parts diagram and service manual. I guess they think it is a throw away transmission??? anyway yes you can rebuild the 80 and there are parts to do so.
So far the 80 has been a real robust transmission in the direct drive application however it likes it's fluid to be changed on a more frequent basis then that of the 40.

if one is really wanting to keep a 40 in the boat,  FFi 330-273-7291 ask for Joe!!
Hobby Boats can be expensive when the hobbyist is limited on their own skill and expertise.

Not sure I’d be so eager to go to a LH prop, even as a backup plan. The 80a is pretty close to a drop in replacement for the 40a so you save a lot of rigging costs (mounts, shaft, prop, etc) and of course you retain the boats proper handling.

It’s also worth noting that the 80 is an in-house design at PCM (not a contract build by ZF like the 40). Correct Craft owns Velvet Drive now, and there seems to be some commonality between the 80 and 71/72 series (which hasn’t been fully explored yet- but they use the same damper plate), so I wouldn’t be so worried about continued part availability. Isn’t the 80 about 10yrs old now? It’s been in a lot of Nautiques…

Have you talked to FFI Marine in Ohio

call 330-273-7291 and ask for Joe

I seem to think he has quite a few parts squirreled away including clutch plates

He doesn't have all the parts, but some are better than none

if I was looking for a Plan B, I'd put in a Borg Warner 71c but there'd be quite a bit of work involved, but parts will be available till ........well pretty much forever

You'd have to tilt the engine, get a new driveshaft about 3 inches longer, get a new prop since the B/W is a 1 to 1 ratio as compared to the 1.23 ratio you have now, and you'd need a LH prop instead of a RH prop since the B/W doesn't make the prop spin the opposite of engine rotation like the 40A.

A little exhaust system hose modification would be needed too, due to the new angle of the engine

Or you could go for Plan C (that's for spending a lot of cash) and get the 80A kit and it should last a long time and you can pay some high PCM prices for parts if you need them.

Probably nothing will ever have the aftermarket support that the Borg Warner does though

Kinda like the small block Chevy of marine transmissions Wink

I am fixing a 95 sport nautique that I got in trade. The 351w engine was cracked in every way possible so I pulled it and the 40a transmission. While it was out, I decided to freshen up the tranny only to find out there are no available parts. I cleaned everything and put it back together with a new seal kit, using the old clutch pack. Makes me kinda sick

What are some alternative transmissions that could fit this boat and still are serviceable? I've heard of the 80a but not sure if there are parts...clutch packs, bearings etc available for it. Hopefully this 40a will last for many years but I'd like to source a plan B.
