can anyone talk me through how to remove the rudder assembly from my 83 ski nautique?

1. Get a six pack of beer and start drinking. What else matters?




2. Remove rear seat.
3. Remove rear panel.
4. Remove rear floor board (might require removal of doghouse.
5. Remove saftey wire at top of rudder post/tiller arm.
5a. Support rudder from below (do not let it drop).
6. Remove bolt from top of rudder post.
7. Loosen clamping bolt on tiller arm.
8. Lift tiller arm up off of rudder post.
9. Remove rudder from below. may require jacking boat off of trailer bunks so rudder clears prop gaurd, if so equiped.

If replacing/removing rudder port, simply remove nuts from bilge side (4 ea.) and work rudder out from below...it will be stuck with sealant. If PO used 3M 5200, you can cuss him now and go get the twelve pack....you will need it.

Hey David, you were right about the rudder not having enough space to drop down because of the prop guard on teh trailer, so how do i jack the boat off of the trailer properly? Are there specific lift points? I'm afraid of damaging the bottom of the boat.

When putting the rudder back together should you grease the shaft and how tight do you tighted the screws above the stuffing box?

I'll answer for David,

You can use Life Boat or is it "Boat Life" sealent, I'm not sure what the name is, but I have used it. Good stuff that will keep water out and yet still come off later.

The rudder shaft does not need grease. And, you can tighten the stuffing box on the rudder till it doesn't drip.

If you've got an engine hoist, you can lift the back of the boat up from the lifting ring. You can use a floor jack and a block of wood - I place the jack under the transom to the sternside of the rudder. You only have to lift it a couple of inches. BKH

Double check the prop guard to see if it can be unbolted. I know that mine can. Two large bolts and that puppy is free!

Removing the old parts went smoothly. I removed the rudder, then slid out driveshaft. The coupler came off with some PB Blaster and some taps with a rubber mallet.
The prop on this boat was a Michigan Wheel 13x13 RH. The folks at general propeller thought that was strange.
Here's some pictures:

gun-driver, im with wayoutthere, I don't think I can use a dripless seal because I don't have the plumbing for it. I put a float switch into the bilge so it auto pumps and the leaking water isn't a concern.
New parts are on their way, and I'll post again when I start putting it back together.
Here's the best photo I can offer for tribute... It will look a lot better when we can get back out on the water
