I just put the boat in the water this weekend. I drove it around no problems. Then when i went from neutral to forward the transmission would start having a weird knocking noise. What might cause this? Does the transmission dipstick need to be tight for proper pressure?

What does a lumpy idle have to do with this?

The dipstick has no effect on the transmission "pressures" It sounds more like your coupling has a few broken springs.
The lumpy idle he refers to may mean that if your idle spped is too low you can get a noise like you describe. |

Check the timing also or any miss in the engine will amplify the noise from the damper plate, chances are you do need a damper and if not corrected it will damage the transmission in the long run, i have installed new dampers with transmission rebuilds and the noise will still be there then i"ll go after the engine to correct the rattle and usually the timing will be out a couple of degrees and I'll dial in the engine and the noise is gone. torsionals are more prevalent at idle but will dis-apper with the rpms and torque curve

Thank you for your help. I will start with checking plugs and wires. I will also have the carb idle adjusted. What idle rpm should I be running?
Also the clicking goes away when i engage the throttle just a hair. |

My '80 did the same thing. The transmission made a clunky, rattling noise at low RPM under way. It was the point where the engine was sort of bucking prior to stalling. I could putt around like that for a while, but it was annoying. I have my carb tuned and the RPM's raised and that noise went away. Good thought, Gotta Ski.
