I have to change the shaft packing of my 95 ski nautique. The problem is that I can not screw the   
nut so far to have access to the old packing stuff. Do I have to loosen the part just behind the shaft packing too? Thanks for help.

Try using a hook and pick tool to access the old packing to get it out.

remy, Here's a picture of all the packing tools that are available but I'll bet you won't find a marine mechanic that has any of them!!! A ice pick or the bent end of a coat hanger would be the tool of choice with them. The closest thing they may have is a old dental pick.

Also, Have you moved the safety set collar forward to the coupling?
