I have a 79 barefoot 454, it has a serious lack of power. it has some transmission problems, the prop wont free wheel and it doesnt stop spinning even when in neutral. I am wondering if this could be keeping the engine from being able to wind up into higher rpm and robbing power. the boat comes out of the hole slow and tops out at about 30mph, the prop i am running is 14x14, it runs and sounds great with no load on it. the motor was recently rebuilt (supposedly) and i am looking for other reasons that may be causing my problems.

sounds like the boat is new to you? I'd check my trans fluid-condition and level...then I'd check the shaft alignment (there are several threads on it here)
but mine recently had the spinning in neutral thing as well...this exact condition is explained by eric l in another thread try the search feature on this site mine required a remanufacture, but I'm only talking about the trans...79 may have your prob solved already |

thats a great selling point when someone is selling a boat, those famous last words... it was just rebuilt. that word just seems to have a few meanings when one is trying to peddle something. Just could mean.. yesterday, one year ago, 20 years ago, never,
first i would suggest what 79 is saying and if you cant solve the problem try a compression test this will acurately tell you the condition of the motor. You definitely also have some transmission issues and there are no quick fixes in your case, the forward clutch plates are warped from slippage which is the end result of another problem and the trans wont rob that much horsepower to slow the engine |

One other concern is I think there may be a leak between the carb and intake, could this be adding to my problem? and what is the best way of resealing it.

Is the boat new to you? If so, where did you get it? Steve |

This could definitely be a problem. Start the engine and spray some starter fluid around the base of carb. If the RPM increases, you have a vaccuum leak. Then you'll need to remove the carb and spacer(if you have one) to see if one or both are warped. Lay them on a flat bench and you'll be able to tell if they are warped. The spacer can be fixed on that same flat surface by laying emory cloth down, spraying a little WD40 on it and wet sanding the spacer down a bit. If the carb is warped you might be able to sand that a bit if it's not too bad, but a new carb might be needed. Then replace with good gaskets. |

When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.
