What are the pros and cons of switching to electronic on my 79 vs. stock? Also are there tunable ones out there? It would be nice to get all of the power when you want it most. Not that my boat runs bad but it can only get better from here. Brian

I would say it's worth the $130. You will notice improved throttle response.

Brian,
Is your motor stock or modified? Electronic ignition isnt going to give you more power..its more accurate, esp. at higher rpms than points ignitions. Also usually more dependable with less maintanence.

You can get into "tunable" ignition with a "box" (change timing/ advance curve, etc),but you need the motor first.

Back to your original question,I agree with Tim,its a good option in a boat like yours , where the original distributor is 25 years old.

I once spoke to guy who spent most of his life wrenching on PCM's. He said the two best things you can do to get the most out of a stock 351 are: (in this order) electronic ignition and an OJ prop.

I suppose you can debate the prop choice, but the electronic ignition seems like a gimme.

Where do you get a electronic upgrade for 130?

What brand of tunable ones out there are the best? I figure if I'm spending the cash now I may as well buy the best for future engine mods that are planned. I too am wondering about where I can get a convert kit for $130.00. If I can score one that cheap I may hold off on a tunable one. Brian

SkiDim will be able to fix you up for that price or very close to it.

SkiDIM sells the Prestolite EI conversion for $150. Subtract our 10% discount and youre at $135. They sell the Pertronix cheaper, but Ive heard its more problematic. The Prestolite ran great in my boat up until my high output coil killed the module.

Brian,
Heres a link to an MSD box....
MSD box

I really doubt that you would need it on an engine you'd build for a ski boat tho?

I just had to pull my pertronix kit out. Engine was missing/ breaking up at high rpms (above 4,200). Put the points back in and it's all good.
The manufacturer says it's a defective part.
Will know for sure when the replacement part shows up.
There have been others on here who have had issues with the Pertronix electronic ignition conversion kits-

I have run the pertronix ignitor in my 82 SN for 10 years with zero problems. Good steady idle, no misses. I also run one in my 71 240z, no problems.

I don't find dealing with points and a condensor a problem. I put about 50 hours/year on the boat and I only change them every 4 or 5 years. I just changed them 2 weeks ago and hadn't touched them since 2002.

I run an MSD box, no problems and allows a bigger spark plug gap.

do you get some performance benefit on going from points to electronic ignition?

is it the same to get a conversion kit than a eletronic distributor?

From experince don't waste your time and money. I have tried pertronix with a flame thower coil miss fires at high rpm $130 wasted 3 years ago. Just put the prestolite kit in tonight 4hrs changing 3 coils ran great for two hours now its missing out of the hole. Spoke to Vince at Skidim Wayne at Silver Spray sports Michigan. And the last guy was a marine mechanic at my local marina who gave me thew best advice if the boat didn't come with electronic leave the points in it. These guys work on the old woodies to the 40' lakers and have not had good luck with conversions. I told Vince I would call him in the morning if it didn't work so it's going back. Take your $150 and buy something for the wife it will be in your best interest. All this was done on an 85 Natique with 600hrs and its mint amd soon forsale with points. Sorry for being so blunt but I could be skiing not testing electronic kits.

I would make the change for sure! I have the Pertronix EI on two of my boats(4 years and two years) and have never had any problems...one less thing I don't have to change or adjust!

If you don't like the idea of the conversion then just buy a breakerlss distributor, it really is not that much more.

I've been running points in my mallory for years.Decided to put in a pertronix setup while getting ready for GL.The shipping box was perfect but the actual pertronix box looked like someone sat on it and it was missing the instructions. With them missing I did not even know if any other parts were gone.Called pertronix, they didn't even offer to send them out. Then I thought why am I messing around with this just before GL,is it running too good?So I sent it back.Sometime when I have more time I'll try again

I installed the Prestolite kit just a while back. It took me a while to get it to perform right and had to upgrade to the EI coil DIM sells. As far as better throttle response.... I do not see it, in fact it feels a little sluggish to me. Seems like I am having to give more throttle input to get it to run like before. It also seems to burn more fuel. I am still not sold on it.

Tom, when I upgraded to the EI kit, I had some mis-fire issues... after some forum advise I checked the timing and found it was set at -0-. I moved it to 6 BTDC @ 600 rpm - and now no mis-fire (replaced the coil at the same time) but boat just seems sluggish.. could be in my head -just seems to need more throttle to perform like before - still tops out at about 44 or so mph at 4500rpm.

And the other issue about burning coils up? well that's because you didn't read the fine print about checking to see if you could or could not by-pass the ballast resistor?

I thought I read all the fine print...I do not think I have burned up a coil... was I not to bypass the coil on the initial upgrade? That is what the instructions said to do. It ran fine on the initial outings until the motor got hot (about 20 min), then it started to miss. That is when I changed the timing, replaced the new 7mm wires with newer 8mm ones, and replaced the coil with the one from DIM for the EI conversion - the instructions said you may need to upgrade the coil... I currently am running the new DIM coil without going through the resistor. It seems to be working as the mis-fire is gone - just feels sluggish. The instructions were not specific on bypassing the resistor with the EI coil.. Could have been coil, wires, timing... or any combination.
