Real Seal in Transmission

This last week-end I had to make a panic stop that required I hit reverse very fast with a lot of power. (A pier was headed my way.) The trans immediately developed a fluid leak that appears to be coming from the real seal. I have no idea how hitting reverse can cause a seal to fail.

Can the rear seal in a 1:1 Velvet Drive trans be replaced with the trans in the boat? Is the seal pressed into that back plate that is bolted onto the trans? I think I can get the seal out without pulling that plate off but pulling the plate off would make seal replacement easier if I can leave the trans bolted to the engine.

I don't know about your seal, but if you hit reverse too hard especially when the drive shaft is still rotating forward, it can ruin the damper plate.

You better inspect the transmission carefully. I am with you...how can reverse alone cause a leak. So, what I am thinking is that the sudden change in rotational direction side loaded the output shaft against bearings or sleeves worn enough to displace the shaft and cause a leak. So, check this area out carefully and repair as needed. Otherwise, you may be doing it again very soon.

Also, does it continue to leak? Maybe hard reverse caused an internal pressure buildup that went past a weak seal, or slung oil on the weak seal.

Just some thoughts...hope it turns out to be nothing.

It continues to leak - even when not running. Sounds bad, huh?

I think I will refill it and head to the river tomorrow for a retest before I condem it.

Maybe if I hit another hard reverse it will straighten itself out????? (You just have to have a sense of humor about this stuff...)

Might be just coincidental to hard reverse. If I were in your shoes, I would disconnect the drive shaft coupler from the tranny flange. Then try to wiggle the output shaft and feel for movement. If movement, then bearing/sleeve is bad. If none, I would replace the seal and hope for the best.

It could be just old age caught up with the seal.
