Does anyone know that material this bracket is made of. I think it is aluminum and it was anodized black. Now its just kind of black and faded white. I just buffed and put new decals on the boat and these stick out like a sore thumb. How do you get the color back? Cant paint aluminum....?
I would appreciate any ideas.

I wanted to clean my brackets up too but didn't know how to start. I will be very interested to find out the best way to shine these up.

Paint it. Bead blast it. Powder coat it. It won't hurt anything.

Scrub it good, sand it with some 400, buy a can of etching primer, then shoot it with Rustoleum, buy Industrial Rustoleum if you can find it. Graingers sales it. Any industrial supply company will sell it. One can will go a long way.

I dont think theyre anodized- just painted. I had my brackets powdercoated. The trick is that the mounting brackets on the boat are pretty tough to remove (the top bolts have backing nuts). So far, Ive only done the platform side.

You guys a nuts! Why would you take the bracket out off of the boat and mess with possibly making another leak.

maybe because they have removable platforms that don't require removing the mounting plates on the hull that could cause a leak. And want to clean up the bracket that is bolted to the platform and slides into the mounting bracket on the boat.

I hadn't thought of powdercoating. That's a great idea and I have a friend that does it for a living. Guess I better give him a call. This boat isn't a trailer queen but I am trying to slowly get it back in "like new" shape.

79, I know that painting aluminum is not a permanent fix, but I did what I said earlier and it still looks great after a year. My point was, as you stated, it's under the water, and you're not gonna hurt anything if you take it off and shoot some good Rustoleum on it.

Time for ya'll to buy a new set,the Boat Doctor is a distr. for Alloy Marine.
They are the OEM supplier of most swim platform brackets. We can sell them somewhat cheaper than the list price they, Alloy Marine, sell them for.

I have the same brackets that were added to my boat this spring. After a few hours in the water, they dulled up and looked crappy too..

Each time you mess with them and or replace them, they'll look the same in no time...

My suggestion is work on the topside, put your money there if need be. The rest save for beer......

I dunno Dave- powder will hold up much better than paint. Mine look as good as they did last spring when I got them back from the coater.

Depends on how they are prepped. Etch->alodine->primer->paint on aluminum will hold up longer than powder on aluminum in most cases. You get one crack and the corrosion will run under the powdercoat.

I would go for black anodize if I wanted to waste another $100 on messing with my brackets.

Just for the record, when i buffed my boat last week, that was the first time it was on a trailer in 3 years...so she aint no trailer queen.

But after all the comments above, i am starting to believe in "the Mojo method".

I'm gonna drink beer while sitting on the platform. That way i wont see the brackets.

Anodizing would be the most durable, but thick glossy powder looks better. So far its holding up much better than the paint did, especially when hit with On/Off hull cleaner.

Rich,

My apologies for the thread-jack.

Billy,

None of this is meant to trash Alloy Marine - they seem like good, honest people and were as helpful as they could be. I want to buy their product but:

I need a set for a 78 SkiTique. As I said, I have had conversations with the people at Alloy Marine and they did not seem to be familiar with my boat. They could not confirm if I need a 10 degree inswing with a 10 degree upswing which is what I believe I need. Also, they could not speak with authority about the need for a center bracket.

Please weigh in with your knowledge and experience. Apologies for posting rather than calling, but due to my current location I will not have access to a phone for a few days (go figure - internet access, yet no phone access! and no, it is not a jail cell, lol)

Mike

I agree that the powder coat isn't as good as paint. The only reason it is popular is that the EPA has made it difficult to opperate a wet paint operation due to the potential air emmisions. Powder is a poor coating with poor adhesion and any route for moisture under the coating will cause it to fail. If the base is aluminum, I would go for the anodizing.

Mike,

Did you order yours yet? They do seem like good folks and last time I brought this up Boat Dr seriously defended Alloy Marine, but I had a little trouble with my 76 tique (same as yours I would guess) also. The swing depends on where you want to mount them. Outside the exhaust or inside. (I recommend outside) Mine are outside and they swung them just a tad too much so they toe in just a tad, but ends up that you would never notice. They sent me 97 degree vertical. I forget exactly what I asked for, I believe it was 100 degree. The 97s slope down just a tad, again barely noticable but not what I had hoped. So I think Boat Dr may be a little off with 90. Maybe the 68 is a different hull but the 76 transom definitely slopes out a bit. I was surprised as you were that they werent more familiar with our hulls as I would think they would have had a ton of orders. My advice is measure very carefully several times and stand firm with what you request. They talked me out of my measurements and on top of that sent something slightyly different than what they said over the phone. (you can tell becasue they etch the two specs into the paint (they did on mine anyway)

Correct. The 1971+ 16'5" Mustang/Skier/Ski Tique hulls should all be the same. The previous Mustang hull (which ran until '70) was different. If they were to use the same bracket, it would be a coincidence- while the hulls about the same size, they are certainly not the same.

I will defend them as to the knowledge that Janet has. As to what will fit and what won't,we are talking about 30 year old boats that did not come with platforms. She does a fantastic job for the info & data she has.
Just ordered a set for a '78 SN and it is a 90 degree transom w/a 13 swing. I am slowly building my own data base as to specs.
I wish all my venders were as helpful and willing as they are,I am sure that they will build a replacement if the product does not meet your satifaction. Call me or Janet................boat dr
