Hi guys

Guess we should have told our mate to keep an eye on the depth guage, whilst driving the boat round loch lomond last night !

Hit some rocks and the boat wasnt too happy about it - mangled the propeller, the three fin bits are all still there but one has kind of bended over a bit and the other two look like they went a few rounds with tyson.

The boat still managed to get us back to the jetty (at about 5mph) but was juddering a bit.
We were told that you can get the prop re-furbished if we can manage to take the thing off. Is this easy enough for wakeboarders who have no clue about much at all ?

And would you recommend a new one or trying to get the mangled one fixed up ?

It's coming into winter now, so i think this might be a season-ender !

Cheers

Gareth

Gareth,

I am far from being an expert, but:

You would probably be better off with a new prop. Some of the guys here can help you with getting the right one.

You will need to check the shaft to be sure it is still straight, I doubt it is. Also, it sounds like an alignment is in your future.

For what it is worth, terms such as "whilst" make us Yanks a little uncomfortable, although I have to admit I have dated a few "juddering" women. I think the disconnect is best illustrated by the US term "fanny pack". For us, it is a small bag worn around the waist - I know the "fanny" part of the term has a completly different meaning for our Brit friends.

You can easily pull the prop. Might be tougher to find a place to get it fixed in the UK. Borrow or buy a prop puller. Because you smacked the rocks it would be wise to inspect the shaft to see if it became bent. They are allowed some flex and typically return to shape.

Hey guys

Would this badboy fit our boat ?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=160156095935

Just have to find out how much shipping would be, but I have been quoted around £3-400 pounds for getting a prop in the uk so thats between 6-800 dollars!

Cheers

Gareth,

I have a virgin (new in the box) Acme 540 prop I can sell you if you are interested. I was originally trying to recoup my cost, about $340 US, but now it is just taking up room. Plus you seem like a good guy.

The details:
Acme Item # 540
13x12V R3B
0.080 cup
Bore Size - 1 inch
Shipping weight - 9 lbs

SKIDIM lists it as a replacement prop that will fit your boat (pg 20). Research it, make me an offer, pay for shipping and you are back on the water.

Hey Mike...if he doesn't want it...i would be interested in working something out for it. Guys here swear by this prop. How come you didn't use it...if ya don't mind me asking. We could save shipping...just bring it with you in December.

BTW; Are you coming alone or bringing that lovely lady (Sabrina) with you?

John,

Coming to FL alone - it will be work-related.

If I had known you were interested, I would have kept my powder dry. Out of respect for Gareth, I'll give him first crack at it. If he is not interested, it will make the trip to FL.

The Acme was too tight a fit on the SkiTique, not enough hull clearance for my liking. I got an OJ 12x13 Legend instead, makes both the girls jump up and pay attention when I hit it!

Gareth - the ebay prop might fit, but it will kill your boat - it's large on dia and pitched for a reduction box.

Get mustangs 540 - they're the shizzle! I got one for mine from Skidim the whole thing with postage and vat only cost just over £200. It took less than 5 days to get to me as well. The acceleration is awesome - nail it and you're up on the plane cut the throttle and it feels like you've got a good set of brakes. They're meant to hit top speed but I was up to 40 with 6 people, three boards and gear in on Sunday. I only cruise about anyway when not boarding so losing a few mph is not an issue.

I do have the original 13x13 off mine in the garage - it's a bit bashed up and I've never used it so don't know whether it'll rattle your fillings out - if you're down this way you are welcome to have a look and make me an offer, but to be honest I'd go with the acme.

Thanks for the info.

Mike that prop sounds good, I guess if I could get one from skidim for £200 including postage I could offer you £150 including postage for your one. So $300 I guess. Would depend how much postage is for you to send it to the uk as to whether it would be easier for you to sell it internally (usa).

Only thing is the skidim brochure says 77-88 nautique, i think mine is a 89 and also not sure about LH or RH ?

It should fit - measure the shaft if it's 1" it'll fit.

Your old prop should be stamped with it's size, shaft dia and rotation.

You should check you shaft for any bend as well.

Give me a bell if you have problems with it 07812 080645.

You better go find out what year your boat is and which motor/transmission it has. If it is in fact an '89, theres a good chance it has the 351w and 1.23 tranny. If thats the case, the 540 (and any other 13x13-ish prop) is not the correct one for your boat. The 540 is meant for the RH 1:1 boats. If you have the 1.23, then the 14x16 prop you linked to would have been the original wheel. There are many Acme's that will outperform it (470, 1442, etc).

Sorry for being totally clueless, but yes it's definatly a 1989 - 2001 series, with a pcm red top 351, not sure if thats the same as a 351w.

Any tips to get the mangled prop off ? Will go up the loch this weekend and try and get it off. Then I should exactly know what size it is etc. What i have been told is theres a wee bent paper clip thing you need to take off, then a big nut (so a wrench for that), then you need a mallet and evenly bang the blades of the prop to get it off and then keep hold of a little thing that will come off with it. not sure if that makes any sense at all - but its 5:30pm friday afternoon after a hard weeks work !

Have a good weekend all!

Yup, the PCM 351 is a 351w. If you can note the engine serial number (located on the tag on the intake manifold) we can better help you identify which prop you'll need. It will start with PLD or PRD.

Gareth, you'll need a puller of some type first. You might get lucky and have the prop fall off with a couple whacks but it's highly unlikely. Look at this thread as it should help. You definitely don't want to beat on the blades of the prop either.

Hey guys thanks for all the advice, hopefully I can borrow a prop puller from somewhere in balloch, maybe on sunday. I had written down the number for insurance purposes:

P L D - P R - R 1 2 / P P

there was also a six digit number: 891788.

does this mean the ebay link is the right size prop, because it is looking like the a pretty good and inexpensive option for a quick fix.

Cheers

Gareth

Yes it does- you have the 1.23 trans.

That reconditioned 14x16 would get you up and running, but it sure wont perform very well. I certainly wouldnt pay $135+ for it. A new Acme at $300 is well worth it. I would think that Delta Propellor or SkiDIM would be able to ship an Acme 470 to you for cheaper than a random ebay seller.

Well, here it is folks - this is the first time I have seen a mustang badgering a bear.

I just might have to drive down there and get it myself.

Just giving you a hard time,

Hi Guys

I got the prop off and down to a specialist in england but he has advised that it is beyond repair! Said it had buckled at the root or something! Nevermind!

So he recommended tvski for a uk replacement and they quoted £400 !! for a new 4blade prop!

So it looks like I will definately buy it from the USA, as it should be half price, around $400 So I guess I am either looking for an ACME 3blade or 4blade prop - does anyone have any recommendations between a 3 or a 4 blade, and a acme or OJ, otherwise I will just go for the acme470, as per previous posts.

Also wondering if I will get hit for some kind of tax when I post it into the UK ?

Cheers for any advice

Gareth, remind us what year boat you have, as well as the motor and tranny combo.

If it turns out that you'd be best off with a 470, I may have one Id be willing to part with. Ive never shipped overseas before, though- so Im no help there.

I guess I should have read the whole thread again. An '89 would have had the 240/255hp motor, so a 470 would be perfect for you.

Shoot me an email if youre interested in a (very) lightly used 470. I used it for the prop test, and Keith had it on his boat for a few weeks- but its basically a brand new prop. No dings or imperfections.

Guys, don't sweat the shipping. You can use USPS Priority Flat Rate Package shipping for $37 for up to 20 pounds. It will get there in 6 to 10 days. goto WWW.USPS.Com and fill out all the forms then take it to the post office. Pretty simple.

$37 US is like, oh, 4.54 GBP these days...
