Hey guys. I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge of repairing the fiberglass surface of a ski jump? I'm sorry I don't have any pictures, "for the jump is 150 miles away". the surface is two piece plywood with a fiberglass laminate on it. The fiberglass has delaminated in some places, below the waterline particularly, and also some areas in the middle of the jump. I was told maybe you could flip the surface over, or do you guys know of any products that may help hold this together? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. Mike.

Mike, How large are the delaminated areas? Flipping the sheet over? The jumps I've seen only has the glass on one side. You should consider replacing the bad by cutting out sections. It's going to be hard to get epoxy back under the fiberglass skin plus the wood underneath may be bad. You can try it by drilling small holes in the glass and use a glue injector to force the epoxy in but I'm not too confident it will work. To do it correctly, the whole glass skin needs to come off and by that time you just might as well replace the sheet.
You're lucky. I go back to when we had to do the deck the old way. Marine ply that we had to wax with a clothes iron. I think we ruined a few of our moms irons back then! |

The delaminated areas in the open field May be as big as 1'x1',and at the bottom I want to say it's most all of the edge which sits in the water and is loosening the surface up the jump above the waterline

Mike, Replace the bottom section. Don't mess with it. It's not worth the risk of a edge peeling up and catching a ski. The 1'X 1' section try injecting the epoxy. Get one of the small (1/2 pint) kits of West epoxy, a set of metering pumps and some injectors from a marine supply. Drill some 1/8" holes on about 2" centers and start injecting. Lay down a piece of wax paper, something flat and some weight.

I can understand replacing the bottom piece, but i'm not familiar with epoxy injection or the products to use. Culd you give me some info as where to find the products you mentioned? I don't think I would like to use an iron and wax on a plywood deck. I never knew that was done. Old Skool baby!!!

It's easy to use. Injection simply means squirting the epoxy thru the holes with a Syringe. Hope that helps. Joe |

Mike, Some distributors don't have the syringes but Jamestown does. Good company and I have used them quite often. jamestown - syringes They will have the West epoxy as well as other brands. Do you have a source for the decking? I'm pretty sure that Harbor Supply in Baltimore, MD. has it. I check it out. As far as the old school goes, some of the first jumps had 3/4" T&G Fir Quarter sawn strip flooring on them! Waxing on ether the ply or flooring was done before it went in the lake at the beginning of summer. The fiberglass is new to me!! Late 80's with the fiberglass I think! Remember, if God really wanted us to have fiberglass boats that he would have created fiberglass trees! |
