I recently purchased a 1988 Martinique with the PCM 351 240 hp. It has the raw water (closed) cooling system. The temperature runs hot at 190 F. I changed the thermostat from 170 degree to 145 degree and it made no difference. I have concluded that the high temperature is due to limitation of the heat exchanger. My question: is this typical of this cooling system? Since it is a pressurized system I assume it is expected to go close to 212. Second: I only run the boat in fresh water so would it be advantageous to convert it to an open system? The previous owner did the closed system conversion with a PCM kit and I have all the old pieces to convert it back.

Was the 190 reading while cruising or at idle too?

190 at full speed. It drops to about 170 at low speed and idle.

I'd check on the heat exchangers for any cloggage first, The oil cooler for the trans and the one on the engine cooling system that is.
If you dont find anything there then go open up the RWP, might be time for an impeller change and rebuild. |

Think how hot a auto engine runs with the AC on! It's a closed pressurized system. M
Make sure the RWP is pumping the full amount through the heat exchanger. You may also want to remove the heat exchanger for a acid cleaning. It may be "plated out". |
