I own a 1995 SNOB with PCM transmission. The Boat has 450 hrs. The last couple of times I have had it out skiing I'm hearing a buzzing/slipping noise noise from the transmission when I make a tight turn at skiing speed, 32 mph. This is only at the apex of the turn. My rudder and prop look fine & boat gets out of the hole OK. If I take a wide circle, no noise. Transmission oil is up to level, changed about 50 hrs ago, fluid still looks new (Mobil One synthetic Dextron III), & not overly hot after skiing 2 hrs. Any ideas ? ...Thanks

Welcome to the forum! How long have you had the boat? We'd love to see some pictures of it in the diaries section.
Does the tranny actually slip or do you just hear the noise? Does it happen when you turn port side only or starboard side too? What about at faster or slower speeds? Is the noise new or has it been doing it since you got the boat? That will get us started. |

I have had the boat since 1997, bought it used with 100 hrs. The majority of the 350 hrs are pulling skiers.
I can do photos. This is the first hint on any problem. I'm pretty sure it makes the noise (I do not feel it slip) in one direction, the starboard side. I only notice it when I'm doing a "P" turn pulling a skier. Thanks |

nothing to worry about it's a common sound from that tranny under that type of conditions.

I recently discovered on the late style pcm's that they moved the pick up screen right to the front cover, they removed the pipe that extended it towards the center and i have seen 4 trans burned up and the complaint was on take off it would slip, I believe the cause is tha the oil is shooting to the back of the trans alowing the pump to grab air momentarily and slippage occurs, I have no idea why they did this. 9 out of 10 of these trans i see have a broken forward drum and i believe it it due to high shift rpm's or even a touch of water in them kills them insantly.

Yes, beehive, if it's just a sound on turns and not actual slipping you can feel, it's normal. When I got my boat, I was with a friend who'd owned CCs for several years. When we made our first turn with that sound, he said, "There's the Nautique noise."
Eric, do you concur? |

What get me is the sound is new. I've had the boat for eight years & all of a sudden this noise. I can't help but think a rebuild is down the road.
Thanks for the help !!! |

is it a 1.23? thinking about this, the pick up screen is off center ro one side, ive also heard this noise, I THINK it may be a hydraulic buzz from the pump pulling some air and cavitating and believe momentarily the forward pack wont slip due to the centrifical force of the oil in the pack keeps it applied, that force overcomes the return spring and keeps it applied. at high rpms the oil slings to the outside and creates its own apply pressure

If it's new, I agree that's weird.

It's a 1.23 alright
Do I dare overfill it a little to see if it stops cavitating ? |

I would try it, only for one run ,im curious too, like 79 said it is a normal noise but i dont think that it is harming anything in the trans. I looked at 3 front covers i have and the pick on one of them is right in the middle and on the other 2 the screens are definitely on the port side. I ask myself why do they keep changing the location? problems maybe? are you running dexron or the 20w? also in 97 you probably have the screen to the port. as i think i mentioned before on the 1:1's they now went with a screen right to the front cover removing the 3 inch extension which now brings it closer to the front of the trans, this trans is the first one i've seen with just the forward clutches warped with no explainable reason for failure, the complaint was slipping on launch, any connection????? I do not no the hours but i will find out

I added about 4 ounces to my '95 transmission. Mobil I Dextron III (tranny is stamped Dextron II)
Also changed out my prop from 3 to 4 blade. No problem with the noise ....perfect My manual is really confusing on the fluid level, they show a dipstick with a flat, one with a flat & a round, & another with a full mark stamped into the stick. For the 1.23 PCM it says fill to the full mark. My dipstick is round with two grooves and two upper "O" rings. Is it possible I have the wrong dipstick? The only real solution I guess is to drain it & fill with two quarts & check the level. ...Or just ski it Thanks all |

On the PCM trannies that have the double oring dipstick, you are supposed to just rest the dipstick on the first (lower) oring when checking the fluid. Do not push it all the way in/down. Also, the tranny should be warm and you check the fluid IMMEDIATELY after you shut off the engine. The fluid should be on the mark. After you have filled the tranny in this manner, you can add a cold (and engine off for awhile) fill mark on the dipstick.

oil levels are a whole new topic, never seen a trans burned up because of too much oil, with all the different angles including boat angles , I think a little experimenting won't hurt, there are many factors that were not factored in, fat sacs, towers,#of people, these all pull the transom lower into the water changing oil levels.the best scenario would be to get the level to the point before airiation (foaming) use the mark on the dipstick as a minimum and go from there
