I 'm getting ready to install my new system on my H/M Ford 302 with a mallory distributor. Is there any need to keep my ballast resistor? I assumed that it's there to lower the voltage to the points, but the way it's wired it also lowers the voltage to the coil. The pertronix system has to bypass the resistor,it needs the full 12 volts. Thanks, Gary

Gary, the ballast resistor is for the coil. Your Pertronix kit will come with a set of instructions that tell you to measure the resistance of the primary side of your coil. If it's below a certain value, you need to keep the ballast. If the ballast is required to stay in place your Pertronix unit (power lead) will be wired to the ignition switch side of the ballast so the it gets the full 12 volts.

Thanks nutty, that makes sense.Part of my problem is, no instructions.I'm always telling everyone to buy from Summit,I get my kit today, the shipping box is in great shape, but the box for the ignitor looks like someone sat on it,must have been a returned item.Other than the instructions I didn't even know if anything else was missing.Called Summit, they were going to call back and let me know-no callback.I called Pertronix (I do have all the parts) and downloaded general instructions, but no values for the coil.

Gary, are you running the stock coil that came with your boat? Do you know? If it is the stock coil you will need to leave the ballast in place and wire it as I stated above. If you want to do away with the ballast and you don't know what type coil you have it would be safe to buy the Pertronix Flame-Thrower coil P/N 40111. It is a 40,000 volt coil with 1.5 ohms primary resistance and it is epoxy filled. That means it can be mounted at any angle and will run just fine without the ballast.

Never got the promised call from Summit and the more I think about it the madder I get.The boat is running great without it so I'm going to send it back.If they cannot send 1st quality merchandise and support it,then they don't need my money. By the way I have replaced the coil, but it's been so long since I've done it,I would have to remove it to find out what it is.At this point I'm too ticked off and have better things to do to get ready for GL. Thanks anyway

Gary, hang in there and don't get discouraged. Relax and take a breather and when you get back from your GL trip you can take on this project.
