Ok let's clean up your back to front. Keep feet together like they are on a plate...knees together and bent...then let go one hand and wait...wait...wait...and then you will do a sweet b2f

Hey guys, I have checked out for the season. I was hoping to get a few more skis in over the last couple of weeks, but it did not work out that way. Some of you guys may know I have suffered for 2 years with arthritis in my left hip. If you didn't know, well, I have. Frankly it has not affected my barefooting too much other than being pain adverse and a bit tentative in a sport that requires full commitment. Life outside of barefooting has been a pain, however. Walking, standing, sitting, sleeping, the pain is 24/7. I have tried not to complain about it since everybody has their own problems.
Wednesday I go in for surgery to get an artificial hip put in. I could not get a clear answer from the doc if I can still barefoot, but all indicators look good. There are certain motions and positions to avoid and the biggest long term risk is dislocation. Those are fairly rare from what I gather. I will be in the hospital for 2-3 days, at home for 2-3 weeks, and functioning pretty normal by the end of the year. I peg the date May 6, 2014 when I will get back on the water (6 months to the day). I will have to play that by ear, but I need a goal to work to. I posted a picture below of the device they put in me. I will keep you guys posted. If you are the praying type, say one for me and my family, the surgeon, too! Thanks! |

Good luck with that Roy. I know you will be back. Someone with your drive and passion for the sport isn't going to be held back. I am wondering if I might be in the same boat. I have chronic pain in one hip, sometimes mild, sometimes somewhat severe, tho never dibilitating, and certainly never bad enough to not take a run. My wife points out to me that in the morning I walk around with one shoulder hunched up higher than the other. I don't even know I do it, but I subconsciously do to stretch out my right (the affected) hip to make it feel a little better. I will discuss with my doc during my annual visit this winter to see what he thinks. I anticipate a speedy recovery on your end.

Hope everything goes as planned and that you recover quickly. Its good that you already have a goal in mind. Keep your focus on that target while you recover.....it will help a lot.

Alright, it was short, but Hollywood said it counted...
Sure felt like a lot longer... Here are the 4 attempts leading up to it. Air Temp was around 47 degrees, water was definitely colder. Ice cream head freeze everytime my head went in the water! Be sure to watch the second video all the way to the end, a little blooper added. |

BTW, I was just too cold to give it another go. Couple of observations, the drysuit really helped, almost feel like I cheated. I know immediately when I caught my left heel, that I forgot to lean away from the boat. Lastly, it was great to see the lake and horizon between those two beautiful plumes of water out behind me!
THANKS again HOLLYWOOD for all your PATIENCE!!! And of course to everyone here for all the tips! |

Nice work Steve. Gotta be tough to focus when it is/you are that cold, but I admire your fortitude. As (I believe it was) Roy mentioned and you verified, the drysuit might give you just a bit of an edge. I hope to give a try here at some point.

The pull outs were silky smooth and we didn't seem to fight each other at all on the plants, or the 88 is just so damn boss. I'm thinking combination of both.
Drysuits really only work if you close the zipper. Engine is drained on the lift waiting for next weekend. Patience is free, gasoline is not. For that I thank YOU skutsch. Your turn overs are so slow, I just love them. |

1. I wish I had a lift or I'd say the same thing. Pulled the boat yesterday, cleaned it up and drained it. But it's a quick, easy effort to drop it back in on an as needed basis. Freezing isn't a big concern down here but we've been below 30 already and cold nights are coming. A buddy of mine across the lake was a bit negligent on winterizing a couple years ago and wrecked his engine. It can happen, even here in the sunny south.
2. Would you be in a big hurry to dunk your head in such frigid water? It kills my ears. May need to get ear plugs. |

Oh yeah, once you get to the point where youre rising off the water like that, youre pretty much there- nice work! Much improved over the previous attempts, looks like its all coming together. Glad to see you still getting out there- once I start burning wood in the stove and wearing my winter jacket, Im done skiing.

That it reason number 1 - although the suddenness of the fall results in instant "I ate my ice cream to fast brain freeze" that results in about 30 seconds of hyperventilating when you surface. Reason number 2 is even though I did purge a lot of air out of my dry suit, I still feel (and look) like an oompa-loompa in that thing, getting that thing to rollover takes a pretty herculean effort. Actually I found I liked having a lot of the air in the suit, after wipe out, and then after getting my breathing under control, I could focus on pushing the air down into my legs, which then would float my feet on top of the water. Anything you can do to conserve energy when laying in the water is Critical. Cold water skiing is a TON of fun, but it really should be focused on perfecting activities where you can minimize your probability of wipeouts. My approach at learning new skills that have a high probability of spending a lot of time in the water is probably not a very intelligent approach... but thats the way I roll - HA! |

Nice work Steve! Gotta admire the determination to get out in the cold...I usually take any excuse I can manufacture to puss out, good for you.
What was HW doing with that hose, filling the suit with water? |

I will keep skiing as long as Hollywood is willing to keep his boat in the water. I have been thinking about that ice thing too. Barefooting with ice in the water could be very dangerous, however, I see no reason why one couldn't continue footin with the shoe ski's. Also no problem riding the slalom or trick ski's too with the ice. Unfortunately, after next weekend my time availability for weekends get killed; Annual family deer hunt and then Thanksgiving. Kevin usually gets out over Thanksgiving but then we generally have serious cold move in, you HAVE to get the boat out before the ramps get iced in - so thats kind of what we face up here where the snow flies. |

HA! Yes, bit of an inside joke there... As everyone knows the purpose of the dry suit is to stay dry and then hopefully warm. We kind of had a group fail when it was time for HW to ski. He got all suited up and jumped in the water, he forgot to ask and everyone else in the boat forgot to check, to zip him up. So imaging the shock of being fully dressed with your drysuit on and then the shock of that ice cold water running in at full speed... Once we fished him out of the water, the only thing left to do is fill the (now zippered shut dry suit) with hot water... The really funny thing is as we are prepping we always joke about jumping in the water with your zipper undone - and then it happened. |
