You're correct. It is a shallow lake in general. I believe it's about 60 feet deep in one little spot. Overall though, depth is not an issue, usually. The problem is as the water falls it loses surface area, so the algae we always deal with, has less room to spread out. Or something like that. Anyway, it's more mucky now.

In a thread that's had a little of everything, we now have the case of the lost shift valve William has the USPS hot on the job of finding it. I wonder, will it ever be seen again? ![]() I think we need to get this guy on the case ![]() |

Shoot out to 777 in NorCal
I go to ACBS show every year at Konocti casino they usually tie up to the docks This year lake was to low to access channels to docks So they did a parade cruise by in main lake area. Not the same |

Lake Sonoma is medium low too
They have reduced speed limit to 5mph on 80% of lake we used to ski on Only main body by dam open to speed Kinda takes fun out of a day trip Like a nascar track just going in circles |

Folsom lake is empty also, been at 5mph for 6 weeks or more already. I think we are in real trouble for water but our City council has approved building 20,000 new homes and they are going up as fast as builders can work as we speak. Not sure where the water will come from. In 50 years I have not seen it this dry.

Weird how summer thunderstorms determine water levels in the Midwest. We are low on Deep Lake and looking forward it may continue to drop. It’s still not affecting boating or water sport stuff.
Those in the shallows will eventually be in some trouble. We have satellite lake level monitoring thanks to one homeowner. We can see it go down twice a day. |

Well, I'm giving up on the USPS. I guess I'll try rebuilding the spool valve myself. I have access to a press. Any advice on this project? I don't see a specific rebuild kit for it online anywhere.

Not many parts at all to the assembly, good luck, hope you find a broken spring or something obvious
Click on the link and you can find individual parts like the spring 71-242 and the internal regulator valve 71-243 Or I imagine Joe at FFI could take care of you for any parts needed

I've given up on giving up. I rebuilt the transmission again, paying special attention to the gap inside the pack. It was within spec. Transmission doing the same thing....forward, reverse and hard forward again in neutral.
Went online in search of info on replace, rebuild and found Capt Deutschmann who generously offered free phone support. I'm waiting for a spool valve from him that has been checked |

Yesterday I was blown away by MourningWood's generosity, again. I thought his rebuilding of my impeller at no charge was amazing but apparently he was just warming up. Yesterday he traded me a complete 71C transmission for one haircut and the whole time I was there made me feel like he was getting the better end of the deal. I'll be working on the boat next weekend and I'll update.

Firstly I'd like to thank Mourningwood's incredible generosity. Thank you sir. Can someone explain this phenomenon I'm having with the new transmission? It spun freely by hand before I installed it. Afterwards it seemed to be in gear, it would not spin in neutral by hand. With the engine running, I have forward in all three shift positions. When I shift to reverse, it still spins forward but stalls the engine. Also, there is no fluid flowing through the lines to and from the cooler. With the engine running, I removed the plug in the reverse chamber and when I shift to reverse fluid does pump out. When I shift to neutral, that fluid stops, so I'm assuming the pump is working and the spool valve is working. I put the pump from the old transmission on the new one because it was new. My engine is RR and if you are looking at the transmission from the back,(the end that attaches to the engine) I had the arrow pointing towards the left on top of the pump so I believe this is correct. Do I need an exorcist at this point?

Your pump is clocked correctly I believe. I also have a rr engine and just checked my transmission and it’s the same.
Btw I was complementing you recently on my thread. I’m impressed by your tenacity. Well done! |

![]() You'll have to rotate the picture 90 degrees, but I'll agree with Spotrep that it's right. If the pump was on wrong, you'd have no pump pressure at all, so since you have pressure it has to be on right, like in the picture. Back when you said it rotated by hand before you installed it, could you hold the input shaft in one hand, the output flange in the other and rotate the output without the input turning or vice versa? Or did they turn like they were locked together Did M/Wood say it worked? ![]() You have a PM by the way. It might be the phone number for a good exorcist. |

Thank you Spotrep. It's only been 5 years that I've been trying to get this wonderful boat in the water permanently. I could have had a degree in nuclear discumbobulation by now. And Ha! KENO, yep, that looks like the same orientation that I have. And I could hold the input and rotate the flange with a small amount of tension.

Well William...........after giving it a little thought, I think that assuming you gave MourningWood a good haircut and he gave you a good transmission in return ,the sorta, maybe, almost logical thing to do would be to put his pump back on the transmission and try it out.
![]() Your new pump seems to be the only common part between these 2 transmissions that have had what seem like the same symptoms. You should have flow to the cooler as long as the pump is turning, and it's turning whether you're in Forward Neutral or Reverse as long as the engine is running. It's not all locked up internally since you can turn the shafts as you described above, but trying to figure out your problem is a head scratcher. That's my illogical logic for right now..........to put the original pump back on and start fresh.

Hey now, I got that trans from the bottom of Tahoe. It is fresh water...
![]() Actually, it came from a running, working '81 Nautique (RH) that I had in 2018. ...and as for me? well, it will grow back. Ha! Best haircut I've had in years!! |

Hey, I remember that "81 on a diet".
Talked with William today and it seems like he may have some flow/pressure issues, well not him but the transmission ![]() He mentions up above that when he pulled the plug from the Reverse test port and put it in reverse, he got some flow, but very little, just kinda burbling out. I tried the same thing on a transmission with a hose and container to catch the fluid after that and could have emptied the fluid out pretty quickly at about 800 RPM. It'll be a couple of weeks till he gets to this again, but he's gonna swap the pump from Mourning Wood back on and see what that does for him,

There are two 3/8" NPT holes on the top, rear of the case. One gets a 3/8" plug, the other has a line to the trans cooler. 50/50 chance to get them reversed. And if they are reversed there is very little pressure to the shift valve.

Good point, however, I don't think any of the fitting/plugs were fooled with since it came out of the '81.

I think the quick summary is......
He gave M/W a haircut, it was a good one ![]() M/W gave him a transmission that worked ![]() William put the new pump he had on the transmission and he might have put his new regulator/shift valve in it too since both parts were new He then installed it and had the issues mentioned above ![]() As part of his troubleshooting, he pulled the plug from the reverse test port (at the top of the forward &reverse adapter) and barely got any flow out when in reverse. He put it back in, didn't do anything with the main line pressure port plug mentioned by roadtrip Some of this was from the thread, some from a phone call the other day.

Well, I changed the pump back to the one that came with the 'new' transmission and now it's doing the cutest thing. When i shift into reverse, the dipstick pops out. I still have forward in all three shift positions. I tried to turn the input shaft while holding the output when I had if off of the engine and they are locked together. I reinstalled the transmission anyway because I thought maybe with the restoration of fluid pressure it might shift out of drive when I selected the other positions. So, dunno what I did but I did something to it when I installed it initially because it rotated freely before I installed it. That said, the engine is running great. I wanted this kind of boat because I love how they sound running in the water, that glug glug glug of the water mixed with the exhaust gas leaving the boat at idle. I get that sound kinda in the yard with the fake lake. I sat there for a while with the engine running and the fake lake and enjoyed that sound. Maybe this is the best I'll get out of this boat. I can see myself on Saturday afternoons sitting in the yard with the hose hooked up and the engine running. Or, I can rebuild this transmission and try again.

It sounds like your forward clutches are locked, but how you had that happen just installing it and running it with no load is a mystery. Maybe tryathlete will start a "get William a transmission fund"
