Why is $250.000 the magic number for being rich. Many people and companys make that with combined salaries or small busineeses. How come $1 million isn't the cut off. I think far less people would complain about higher tax rate if it were for thoses making 1 million or more.

There are not enough making over a million to pay the bills that have been rung up. What percentage of the population makes over a million? Very small, certainly not a large enough group to have any form of voting power. Taxing only them at significantly higher percentages is essentialy mob rule. Taking what the mob wants not because it is right, but just because the mob wants it, and the mob is big enough to get its way. The only voice the rich have is to take their money over seas and look for someone who will treat them better, then the mob gets angry and does not understand why this happens. Imagine the governement picking another similar sized minority group and treating with the same degree of unfairness.

The $250,000 is what is going to effect small businesses. That is where the jobs will either be created or eliminated. Adding a new machine or more people will come to a hault and more cost cutting will take place. it will drive more companies to look elsewhere to do business. Taxing those between 250 & 1 million is going to raise the price of goods for those under $250.000 and so the entire country will suffer this burden one way or another. The million + club can absorb the increase without it having a major effect. Maybe $500.000 would be fair. 70%+ of the countrys workkforce is in small business.

Yep, one small step forward for humanism. Too bad it took so long. It's amusing watching these religions evolve. Always changing their books and preaching.. that in itself should tell you something.

eric,

You've mentioned "Fair Share" a few times. What do you consider a "Fair Share" for people to be paying in taxes? Is it a certain percentage of income? A certain dollar amount?

Really? What did the pope change about the Bible or his preaching? Did he tell catholics it is now OK for them to use birth control the catholic church has always been against?

Yes, exacly. He changed is preaching. Now the pope says, "There may be a basis in the case of some individuals as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom, where this can be a first step in the direction of moralization, a first assumption of responsibility, on the way toward recovering an awareness that not everything is allowed and that one can do whatever one wants. But it is really the way to deal with the evil of HIV. That can really lie only in a humanization of sexuality."

Seewald asks, "Are you saying, then, that the Church is actually not opposed in principle to the use of condoms?"

Pope Benedict: "She of course does not regard it as a real or moral solution, but in this or that case, there can be nonetheless, in the intention of reducing the risk of infection, a first step in a movement toward a different way, a more humane way, of living sexuality."

Never before has the catholic church made these exceptions.

True, they have never addressed the issue of condoms outside of the catholic church and now they have. That hasn't changed the Bible or the stance of the catholic church regarding CATHOLICS and their use of them, though.

Who is he addressing in his statements?

OKIE, it's a change, and it's a small step forward in their iron age philosophy's. Would you like me to outline more things that the Catholic church has changed over it's existence?

I agree you could argue it can be construed as a change to their philisophy and teaching on the subject. I would disagree that it changes "their book", like you are trying to claim.

As a point of discussion, do you think that the church changing and evolving their philisophy or interpretations is a bad thing?

Sorry, I should clarify. When I said, "changing their books" I was speaking of religions in general. I didn't mean that the Catholic church changed the bible regarding contraception.

No, it's not necessarily a bad thing only more evidence that the books are stories written by man. Ever play that game "telephone" when you were a kid?

They wouldn't have anything to change because the Bible doesn't talk about contraception. The only thing they would be changing is interpretation of certain stories and how they philisophically stand on an issue as a church.

I'm not sure I would agree that philisophical changes somehow relate to proof that the books are "stories written by man." Would you say that a more liberal view and interpretation of our Constitution by the courts today, proves that Founding Fathers really meant for us to be a socialist country, not a democratic republic?

I'm glad to see that you're willing to accept change (evolution) in religious philisophies as much as you are willing to accept change in scientific theories. At least that is consistent.

What really pleases him is the ability to come in, change the subject and talk religion. This from someone that claims he don't believe. Amazing.

In all fairness, technically eric brought us back to a somewhat religious subject matter, then the flames got fanned from there.

Like Okie said, I was responding to Eric's comments. And you should care because religion and politics go hand in hand. It was, after all, G.W. Bush the compassionate conservative who granted immunity to Pope Benedict XVI in the molestation cover up of several children by the priesthood. But hopefully there are no Catholics here. Ever wonder why Priests can't get married? That wasn't always the case. If your Catholic you might at least want to make sure that your priest isn't a pedophile which you can check on at this link: http://app.bishop-accountability.org/member/psearch.jsp?op=assignments

They don't - There is a separation of church and state for a reason. While the poitical theme may believe there is a God, they stay out of religion. Now for some one that doesn't believe at all you seem way to interested in religion, at least it appears so here and like I said before if that's all you want to talk about start a thread. You are startimg to sound like Keith Oberman.

OKIE, tax burden on a million dollars could definitely afford a 350k boat write off with a kitchen as a second home, on 100 grand 35 grand would wipe you out and you cant afford that second so called home. thats what i mean by fair share, or equal share
at that level, more write-offs are available to you and you pay less of a burden, now if I could write off bar tabs for my personals

Eric, Interesting guestion to pose on the morning I overslept and am late for work. First to adress "OMH, you seem intelligent." Thanks and back at you. That is what makes this fun. You as well as anyone understand that this is about sharing ideas more than having to be right all the time, you never belittle and you put your thoughts out there. Thank you.
As for the buy American question. Big three only? How about hondas and toyotas that are assembled here? GM is now owned 15% chinese, are they in or out? Anyway American assemblers would initially bennefit of course, US sales would be up, alot would go unchanged globally due to forieng content of vehicles, but it would not take long for changes to happen.Supply and demand kick in. Auto assembly labor would suddenly be at a premium. OT would be through the roof affecting profitability. Union demands would increase, strikes become a risk. Honda and toyota will not roll over, they will drop prices testing american resolve. the price war will benefit those to weak to hold with the buy american agreement. US makers unable to handle the immediate demand increase will raise prices hurting US standard of living. If the buy american embargo holds the inflated car prices reduce total US car sales hurting dealerships, shipping and other support issues. Increased costs lower the us standard of living overall. OF course those employed by in the foriegn car system in the US will be dessimated, along with their familys, but they will migrate to the US makers, but due to decreased overall sales not all will find employment. Not to be left out honda and toyota would probably buy into or merge with the US makers to get their piece of the pie, sending profits overseas. it just goes on and on. wish I had more time to think this through, these are my first thoughts. Sorry for the spelling , no time to proof read. Dave.

I say that because the Catholic church is the most deranged of the Christian religions. They have systematically raped thousands of children and then managed to cover almost all of it up and have spent Billions defending themselves and paying people off to settle out of court. And unfortunately for catholic belief the only way to heaven is through the Church. People don't realize how big of a scale that this is happening on.

And to answer my own question. It's all about wealth and greed. Priests used to be able to marry but the Church eventually realized that when the priests died they left all their belongings (property and money) to their children. If priests can't marry then they can't have a legitimate heir and thus everything the priest has reverts back to the church upon his death.

Do you use netflix? Check out the movie "Deliver Us from Evil"

"This unsettling Oscar-nominated documentary from filmmaker Amy Berg investigates the life of 30-year pedophile Father Oliver O'Grady and exposes the corruption inside the Catholic Church that allowed him to abuse countless children. Victims' stories and a disturbing interview with O'Grady offer a view into the troubled mind of the spiritual leader who moved from parish to parish gaining trust ... all the while betraying so many."

Well, if they bring up there religion I give them a piece of my mind but I'm not usually the first one to bring it up cause they are usually very open and chummy about their beliefs. Many Christians consider it their obligation to follow what is termed the "Great Commission of Jesus". That is to say, try and proselytize others.
