More pictures when you get it wet ~ I just can't get that boat out of my mind. The detail and black out powder coating just set that thing off and make it pop. Did you remove the Windshield frame and powder coat it too? Or is it just painted.

Thanks for the compliments!! I painted the windshiel frame, it has a little bit of corrosion on the bottom which has made it a little delicate in a couple of spots and was afraid to let it out of my sight. Shouldn't be long though, I'm just finishing painting some brackets for the motor and should have it back together by Friday. I hope that I can wire the boat Saturday or Sunday and get the motor back in next weekend. I'll definitely get those pictures posted when it hits the water!!!

Any details on your swim platform. Composite? Totally custom? What style braces / brackets? Where did you get the material?

Im not sure what you mean, but if you're talking about the strut, rudder, fin, and pick ups, they are accessable from inside the bilge. Everything is trough bolted. I hope that I answered your question right.

Beauty Ed! Glad she performed well for you. I noticed the broken dash plaque under the switch. Marty Mabe can get those done for you. Was the Ski Nautique script like that before the rebuild? Never seen one like that but it looks great.

Thanks Keegan! Thats a great idea, Marty sent me some cool stuff already, I need to hit him up on those. That is the original style of script for that year, Art Cozier sent me the original flyer and a bitchen negative for the '72 and it matched up to the script that was on it when I bought it. My neigbors dad had the vinyls made for me for $25 each! I couldnt go wrong with that!! Ran great though, I am impressed. It needs a little tuning, they run dfferent under load than they do on the hose, ou know. Do you know anyone by chance that rebuilds the Air Guides? I tried cleaning mine up, but didn't anticipate that they'd work.

Ed.

There is a thread on rebuilt Airguides. I'll see if I can do some searching and find it later. One thing I do remember it wasn't cheap but, they were fantastic looking - better than original!!

I took my speedo apart and cleaned it up, but now it leaks I hate it too because I have the older face on mine. I have not seen the thread on rebuilding them either and will post a link if I find it. What I was going to do was buy a more available airguide barometer or other gauge with the same bezel and swap the internals, since my chrome is so bad, but your black bezels look great. Did you say they are not working?

The bezels were hammered!, I texture coated them and painted them black. I was going to send them to powder coat, but wasn't keen on leaving them apart too long, you never know what is going to happen!

Hey Pete,
Not sure if you remember this post, but just by chance, my speedo's started working last month when I was on the water with my brother. I saw an airguide post and this came to mind.

Beautiful Boat Ed. For your Gel Coat application. You mentioned that you sanded the old gel Coat down with (180 - 220). Do you just sand until the surface looks uniform and consistant with the grit of paper you are using, or did you try to remove a certain amount of the old Gel coat? I am wondering what the overall mil thickness should be and how I stay in that window. Great Job!
Thanks.......Tom

Thanks Tom, It was a lot of work and beer!! I sanded to consistancy, I'm not sure how many mils thick the gel was before i sprayed the new, but it was pretty thin. Are you shooting the boat yourself?

Ed I am not 100% sure. We would like to do a color change to the dark blue on a white boat. I have to re do the interior anyway. My concerns are
1. I am not a paint and body guy. (I can do any other type of restoration but that) I can sand, spray paint with a gun.... just blocking surfaces straight and working with bondo I am just not good at.
2. After we disassemble the boat complete how and where do I flip it to re do the hull.
3. What will the longevity of the new Gel Coat be?
The top of the boat needs to be re done due to some damage, and the side has some dock rash. So my thoughts are go ahead and re do the whole boat.
Thanks.......Tom

Tom,
First off, how bad is the bottom of your boat? Also, did you see the set up that Pete had in the pictures of the other thread? That would be ideal for the, "do it yourselfer". If you have rafters in you garage, two chain falls could be sufficient(depending on the structure) as well. I only did the keel on my boat, the bottom wasn't tha bad.

As far a being a paint and body guy, I'm not one either, I just went for it. Start patching those chips with some filler, and sand. Make sure that the surface is clean, you will use a lot of acetone. Also, gelcoat is a comepletely different animal from paint, and sprays different. You wnt to make sure that you have the right gun, and the right additives for you gelcoat. I used a 50/50 mix of Pestek and Valspar gelcoat. You get a almost walk a way finish. Let it cure, 1000 grit wet sand, and 3M Perfect It polish, your done.

You want to make sure you spray it 25 - 30 mils thick. You should never have to spray it again, unless you suffer some major damage. You will take a couple mils off each time you sand and polish it over the years.
