Bruce,I haven't found or heard a solid reason......
Probably the amount of use or consistent use on a car tire has something to do with it. 40-60k on a car tire is pretty quick what 5-6 years? The trailer tires just get abused, they sit for long periods of time with the boat on the trailer, then get a air check and then run 1 to 1000 miles dunked in the water and repeat or just unload the boat for the summer and sit again...... Repeat again for winter! I wish there was a better way to tell if a tire was going bad other than a failure! I think my tires were a victim of the 1 mile to the boat ramp spring and fall as the boat was lift kept. |

Why do trailer tires do that and car tires don't? Glad your boat didn't get hurt.
Alan, that's awful. I'm sorry to hear that. |

I rolled the dice when I brought the new '87 Ski Nautique home to Mass from Indiana in October of 13.The tires looked good, lots of tread and the air pressure was spot on. But....
![]() This tire peeled off just into PA, it took out the rear step board and the pipe for the trailer guide. This was at 5:30 sat night, I spun on the spare and continued to roll. Then..... ![]() The other side let go at about 11:30 pm near the NY/CT boarder. I limped 3 exits down the highway on the cords after I remove the tread that was wrapped around the axle. ![]() I found a hotel, had a couple beers and called it a night. Sunday I managed to find a tire shop open that had two trailer tires, had them spun on and made it back home without any more problems. There was fortunately no damage to the boat, but the trailer took a few healthy shots. The tire shop told me the tires were from 2000 as seen in the sidewall stamp, and the steel cordage had begun to rust/ rot thus causing the failure. Live and learn I guess. No one was hurt and the boats home! Safe travel to ALL of you! See ya on the water! John |

John makes a great point! What if? I had a tire suddenly "peel" on my Suburban at about 70, it exploded, causing Lauren to actually CRY, it scared her so much! It busted the side view mirror and the running board! They were dry rotted from sitting, I was warned, and decided to roll the dice. I lost. |

Alan, I bought those tires in '06... That would make them some of the newer ones I own! I've run a lot of tires of unknown age and marginal condition (mild cracking on the sidewall, etc) and the only blowout I've ever had was when a fender bolt rubbed through a sidewall. Personally, id keep a close eye on tire pressure, make sure the trailer tows level (so you don't overload the front axle) and run them. But that's just me. Of course, trailer problems suck and it's better fixing stuff before a trip than doing so on the side of the road. Use your best judgement!

Alan, sorry about your injury.... Hand injurys are the worst, you forget how much you need both hands!
Tires, regardless of manufacturer, deteriorate over time, check the stamp on the side wall for the date of manufacture. Anything older than 6-7 years and how many miles should be questionable. It would be a shame to have a tire peel apart and slap up against that beautiful hull and cause thousands in damage! If you're questioning it now and the boats in storage, then it's probably time for a new set! Cheap insurance for a long road trip! Hope the healing process is quick and painless! John |

Alan, fortunately I can not say "I feel your pain". But you do have my condolences and best wishes for speedy recovery.
Hollywood, I have the mirror but need a crew to hold the beer as I do not have cup holders. Being able to say You shared the day in my boat would be a very high honor. Give JBear a hug for me and don't beat-up the kid too badly. |

Alan, sorry about the mit. That has gotta hurt like hell when you try to go to sleep. Watch out for those yellow pills, they can make you stooopid.
Your beautiful boat atop questionable Goodyear (marathon?) tires kills me. I would buy two new mounted sets and mount them on new hubs. Pull what you have off, hubs and all and toss them in the truck. Floor jack and cross handle wrench. Wheel and tire and hub combos are pretty damn cheap in the grand scheme of things. I have quite the collection cause I just dont trust them. Heck I bet you spent more on sandpaper. |

We'll be there, but I had some mechanical items had to be done to the boat that I most likely won't be able to do now. The boats going to sit under the tent on it's trailer all weekend anyway so if it's not running properly it won't make much of a difference. The only thing I HAVE to do is get some tires on the trailer and service the wheel bearings.

+1 on what Jerry said. Does that mean you won't be making the trek at all or just no pulls behind that awesome boat yet? Either way, best wishes and so sorry to see this. |

That thing has to throbbing tonight. I hope they gave you some good pain killers. If it is not to soon for de-gloving stories, I knew a fire fighter who lost his ring finger in a similar manor. After years of wondering about the short finger I got up the gumption one day to ask what happened. He said his wedding ring became hooked on a basket ball rim will dunking a ball (he was maybe 5'6" tall!). Turns out he had put a picnic table near the net to launch from. Because of a poor mind the whole body suffers.
