Been a while since I've posted, but just wanted to say the boat is looking great!
Hilarious that you referenced my 67 build in your first post. I have made zero progress on my boat since right about the time of your post (5 years ago). Seeing your progress is giving me some encouragement to get back to work though. |

Thanks Phil - two of the pitots are from your kit.
Pete - the bracket for the original mirror is still attached to the windshield. I bought a taylormade mirror on ebay that is in nice shape and was pretty cheap since it was missing the mounting bracket. Must have been destiny to bring them together. |

Here's the ski mirror - correct mirror attaching to the original bracket.
Blower, vents, gas tank installed and wired up. Just need to hook up the stern light. A few more things to take care of: Install fuel pump and line to carb, add electric choke to carb, install alternator, exhaust manifolds, and drop in the distributor... |

Working on the alternator and exhaust manifolds.
A Motorcraft automotive unit came with the boat - I've replaced it with a modern 1 wire alternator. After moving the old pulley to the new alternator, everything will line up with the addition of a 1" spacer. Here's what the exhaust manifold cap and riser gaskets look like. I don't think there is a source for these, but I've heard you can buy gasket material from NAPA. Does anyone have a part number? |

Some updated pics of the helm and new front seat - my boat likely left the factory with throwable cushions for the bottom and a snap in back cushion but I had the new upholstery attached to the plywood. The last pic was taken by the PO prior to disassembly.
The dual speedo mounting plate is original to the boat and would have had aqua-meter gauges mounted to it (one 45 MPH, the other 55 MPH. Looking at the base, one of them was surface mount, the other flush mount) - when I got the boat it had, 5" 50 MPH airguides which hung over the edges of the plate - It now has two 4" 45 MPH Airguides. You can barely see the hand shift next to the steering wheel and the Morse hand throttle (a $29.95 option) |

At long last... the '65 is in the water and running again! (after at least 30 years, 11 of those in my possession)
Initial start on a garden hose went well until it started to rain, Next I dipped the boat in the Cedar River on the trailer to finish breaking in the cam, test the complete raw water system and transmission shifting. Found my thermostat housing was leaking, fixed that, then trailered to Lake Delhi for the shake down cruise.
Docked next to the 97: Running down river about 25 MPH Thanks to Keith and everyone on CCFan that has helped with this project and provided moral support along the way, especially Art who found the original bill of sale and helped with the missing puzzle pieces. |

Phil,
Fantastic to say the very least. I knew you'd get it in the water one of these days. Looks great.

I've been taking it easy breaking in the motor, but so far I'm pretty happy with the way the 390 is running.
The distributor is a Mallory marine unit with points. I'm running a Carter 4 BBL (I believe this to be the original carb) converted to electric choke. Idle is smooth, throttle response is nice and snappy with no bog. I have to give a shout out to Gary Myers from Motorheads Mfg in Ely for doing the machine work and assembly, working with parts from multiple motors. |

I'm looking for a few items to finish off this project:
The Ski Nautique script that goes on dash is broken in two pieces. I believe its the same emblem used on the Gen 2 boats, and maybe even the 2001's? My 71C does not have a neutral safety switch. If anyone has a junk Velvet Drive laying around, I'm interested in the switch, the mounting plate, and the cam that actuates the switch (like the one shown here). Send me pm if you have either of these. Thanks! |

Phil
I dug through my "pile of parts that might come in handy for somebody one day" and came up with what's in the picture. It's the cam and the plate you need. I found a dead switch, but that won't do you any good. This plate takes the newer NSS that has a 7/8 hex head. The PCM part number is R153011 for the switch. The part number listed and linked earlier will fit. There's a wide variety of prices when you get looking. It's cheaper than the old bigger switch too Send me a PM with your address and they'll be on the way to Iowa for a worthy boat. We'll call it a donation to your project
