What would some of the scams be? How would someone gain with a listing like this? I'm just not that familiar with the Ebay process! |

Pete, There are boats listed everyday that are scams, you can tell just from the way they're listed and most are pulled within a day. The scam is that most require atleast partial payment once a bid is won, so you open yourself up to paying for something that the seller may not even have. There are recourses to get your money back but I would bet most scammers cover their tracks pretty good. Bottom line, if the deals too good to be true, it probably isn't. Gotta be careful and when bidding on something of value talk to the seller in person. |

As Alan mentioned the scammers are asking ridiculously low "Buy it Now" prices and require high % payment immediately after the auction. They can also steal somebody's eBay account and list a boat they don't even have! You will usually find inaccurate descriptions and unusual wording. "Pro Hoss 454 small block motor"... Most of the time the actual boat is recognized for sale on other sites, and the listing is yanked.
I would never send anyone more than a couple hundred $$$ deposit for a vehicle bought on eBay. |

Pete,
There is an Aquanut Parent I know who got sucked into one of these scams, he won the auction of a too good to be true deal, the seller requested a wire transfer, about $15k, he transferred the money and you can imagine the result. Obviously not very smart on his part. Interesting enough the same exact listing/boat showed up again a few months later, I contacted the owner posing as an interested buyer, based on the emails back/forth it was most likely the same scammer, when we got to the point of me needing the account # for a wire transfer he vanished. To date they never caught up with this individual or this parents $15k. I think your safest bet on buying over the Internet is always use PayPal as I believe there are some safeguards built in, also beware of cashiers checks, have heard stories of scams with them as well. |

I refuse to give a deposit on a vehicle. Most all people I have done business with on ebay are willing to wait a couple days for me to come pick up the item and pay in full. I make arrangements for this to happen before I win though. If they are not willing to go along with terms I am comfortable with I stop bidding.

I've been buying and selling on ebay and craigs list for years and have never been scammed. On major purchases like a boat, car or motorcycle, keep it local or plan on taking a trip. One exception - manufacturer authorized dealers. I may find the deal and dealer on ebay but I contact them through the through the manufacture's website. That's the phone number I call to make payment arrangements. Otherwise, anything private, if it's worth the savings it's worth touching it, seeing the paperwork and then putting down the money in person.
Watch out for star ratings - if the seller has 50*'s and has been buying $5-$10 ebay items for a few months and never sold anything similar to what you are looking at - stay away. I was looking for Harley Fat Boy - found an '03 listed for $5K with an offer to end auction early - guy claimed to be in Chicago and wanted me to Western Union him a grand deposit. I told him my brother-in-law would come by and give him cash the same day - he disappeared. Three days later the same bike showed up in an LA based ebay listing. For motorcycles, I've found steals on ebay based on time of year. I was looking at a Big Dog Chopper locally, an '05 with low mileage. New the bike is mid-30's with options, 2years old it's mid 20's. I found one from a Toledo Dealer lelivered to NJ for high teens with NO mileage (about 350 miles on it). My 2005 Ski Nautique 226LTD was a leftover on the internet this June with only 10hrs on it on a new Eagle tandem trailer. I called the dealer who was asking $44K to get rid of it to make room for his 2007's and I sent him a downpayment as fast as I could - again, factory Authorized dealer. I only buy site unseen from factory authorized dealers, and even they dump stuff cheap if you catch them at the right time. Patience is the key - you might have to search ebay every day for months, but in the end if you are careful, you can make out. |

And just to prove Jim's point, the seller ended the bid early due to an error in the listing, Bull..., scam. |

Maybe not quite ebayhole status, but still a stretch. I sort of tend to agree with the first questioner, but then maybe I just don't have any vision. Pete, what do you think?

Well, the boat will sell! It will be used as a pattern boat. The key thing is the seller states that most of the hardware is still there. Pattern boats are currently being debated in the ACBS as to what class to put them in for judging. When so much wood is replaced, is it really a antique or classic or should it go in the contemporary (after 1969-new wood boat) class? They are trying to come up with a system of how much of the original wood was used! On a "gray" (the color they turn from sitting out in the weeds) sometimes the only thing left will be the stringers and frames. (yes, if you don't cover up wood with fiberglass, it usually doesn't rot!!) A engine will be easy to find. Maybe not the KB racing he has mentioned but there are plenty of the Chris/Hercules engines around from the non-original re powers.

Pete,
Like the guy on the other thread said, we learn something from you everyday. Never really thought of the concept of a pattern boat before. Makes sense. |

Pete when they make a pattern boat do they use the frame work from the original or do they make all new.

I may not be Pete, but from what I've learned it depends on the condition of the frame - if it's solid they reuse it, otherwise, the frame is used as a pattern too.

Don't bother, report it to ebay so they pull it. Another scam. I got a shirt order from our website this morning for 10,000 tee shirts, he wants to pay with his credit card , can I ship overnite on his fedex account to Nigeria? I'll get right on it sir...Probably the same ^(*$(*%^(*) that lists half of these scam boats. |

I would have to agree with Tim. Doesn't look like a scam, but a clueless seller to me. By the way, do you think that jet drive would fit my 71? I might consider converting mine!

With the drought and the low water levels all over, that may not be a bad idea! I think the old Bueller jets were advertised to be able to run in 10" of water. Of coarse that was once you managed to get them up on plane!! |

opening bid $1. no reserve. Scammer or stupid I say it's pulled tommorrow. Original condition, painted before I bought it, huh? That interior looks original too, no? Maybe you guys are right and he is just uninformed. It is a "Charming" little boat though. Don't read into this personally anyone I'm just screwing around. If it is for real the guy should have paid someone to list it for him. |

I never read much into the NO RESERVE. It is easy enough to have someone bid on it for you if it doesn't go for what you want. It does have some parts I could use for mine though. I guess if I can get it for $2, it would be worth the trip to get the parts!

Tim, Did you get a answer back on the 69 Skier jet? I did send him one too asking if he was sure it was a jet. The answer I got back was "yes I'm sure" (guys, I wasn't rude to him!) So I asked him if he knew if it was a Bueller jet. I'll see if he responds or if you are correct Alan, it will be gone tomorrow!

I didnt catch that it was listed as a jet when I sent him the message. I corrected him on the year and length, and mentioned that earlier Skiers were commonly 6 cyls. He responded: "Thank you for bringing that to my att. it is 16' but the motor is original and v-8 thnx for your att." |
