Oodles of clearance between the pan and hull in a 95... it’s the 97+ SN’s where they lowered the engine that would be questionable with a pan swap...

Good point Ken ... I did notice that when I first installed. My understanding was there was little enough room one may not want to take the chance. While I didn't measure it, seems like there was at least 2 or 2 1/2 inches which as Gary said would be oodles since the difference between the pans is only about 3/4" in height. That would still make it a bit tough to get the drain plug out and it could get a bit messy. But at least we now know it's doable.

Not sure why you wouldn’t assemble the motor completely while its on the stand, then connect the tranny and drop it in. That’s what I did and it was a lot easier then climbing in and out and working on your knees.
Drop it in hook up the ground, strainer hose, plug it in, align and done. [/url] |

I put one of these on both my boats along with all my vehicles (except my F250 diesel plenty of room to work under there)

If the blue pan is readily available but has the drain plug on the bottom and not the side where it is accessible then why not just weld a plug fitting on the side like the red one. Kinda looks like a no brainer for someone with a rusty pan edit: maybe a dip stick port also |

I like the way you think Duane (about the welded drain on the side)
It's got the dipstick port already Just gotta put in the dipstick fitting from the old pan. Joe just needs to find out the brand and application or part number of the blue one from the machine shop and it should be an easy and cheap replacement for certain years of boats. Probably have to do the Gary S oil pan capacity test to check/mark the dipstick

Not familiar with that method. Just measure from the pan rail down to the "full" mark on the dip stick on the red one and transfer that dimension to the new one Normally the full mark is the same on all pans using the dimension from the rail down. ie: it is the distance to the oil below the crank that you need to be concerned with |

Here's a link
Gary's test PCM had different dipsticks for different mounting angles etc This 95 example in Joe's boat being relatively level should be pretty straightforward. |

Joe, I've noticed some absolute shoddiness in this picture, that based on your previous posts (I was gonna say based on how anal you are, but decided not to } that I just know you won't be able to live with, so you should fix it now rather than later. That sticker on the left valve cover may be original but it's crooked and peeling in the lower left corner. It'll eventually drive you out of your mind Not much else on the boat is original so why should that be? |

I too noticed that but I just thought that others probably are not the "stickler for originality" that I am. If it is not OEM and perfectly original then I have a problem with it on my boat. Clear down to the trash that CC left in my bilge. Of course when I restringered mine I replace the trash in the same location, just in case an ACBS judge were to be snooping around. We all know what a pita they are. |

Ha ha ... you guys I suppose I should feel good if that's all the CCF seasoned crew can find to poke fun about I did notice the crooked vc label and though I'm not sure I should admit it publicly, I did actually try to remove it to get it straight. Twenty some years of being out of parallel won and I decided to leave it (of course figuring that no one would really notice).
The pan is another one of those preference things though. I recall how tight it seemed under there before and when I'd drop a nut or washer it would be heck retrieving it so I'm more inclined to leave more space than less. And considering I already had the original pan and had also already had it powdercoated .... Incidentally, for those that are thinking about using a std. automotive pan, though we now know it will clear in the bilge, they'll also have to use the automotive oil pick-up. The marine version being shallower and configured a bid differently they use a proprietary pick-up that may be too shallow to do the job well and may not allow the pan to bolt up anyway because the deep well is located further aft - the marine version extends downward further forward. Paul, I would have liked nothing better than to assemble it complete first. Unfortunately my space is very limited - i.e. the ceiling height is very low - so I don't have the option of an overhead hoist. I was installing with an old school cherry picker - plenty of lifting capacity but the arm only goes out so far and that was still about 3 or 4 inches short of being centered on the cradle. My Son lowered the hoist while I pushed it into place and with the angle of the far side chains I'd surely have damaged something had I tried it fully dressed. I do like the gizmo in your link though .... think I'll have to get one of those anyway Gary, sorry for the delay but I'm dropping those valve covers @ USPS today - I'll let you know what the shipping is. |

Just discovered that I didn't take any pics of the throttle and shift cable routing and bracket mounting locations and don't remember where or how they go. When this whole project started I was only planning on a head swap to the GT40P heads so with just a couple of days it didn't seem like I'd forget. BUT that's been 4 or 5 months ago now.
If anyone has pictures, or can snap a few for me, or at least talk me through it, I'd appreciate the help. THANKS |

Throttle goes under the motor and up from the rear on the left side of the tranny. The transmission cable fishes up past the water pump around the front behind the alternator then back along the valve cover to the linkage.
Just feed the tranny cable in that general area where it works out the best. |

Love the RED bell housing and oil pan. It coordinates nicely with the gelcoat color scheme.

So I was able to get a lot more done on the ol' girl this weekend than I had figured. I'd guess I'm between 95% and 98% done. Only thing left to do before I can turn the key is install the bilge pump, blower & air ducts and clean out and install the fuel tank.
But here is how it looks now: And the straight through Y-pipe exhaust Over all, everything assembled fairly easily, though there were a few hic-ups. Probably the biggest one was after getting the transmission installed and engine aligned I realized that I had forgotten to tighten the trans line fittings and no way to spin the 22 1/2 fitting at the bottom without taking the transmission back out - that set me back a couple hours See all that RED JQ ?? I dooo like the red ( don't see much of that blue now anyway, right Paul? LOL ) |

LOL, yes I saw that post. And yes, with everything I'm going to be thinking about it would be my luck to leave it that way. It's kind of like getting the boat out of winter storage and doing a quick start-up so you can hit the lake the same morning, then forgetting to put the plug in. Not that I've done that .....

It is looking very good. Nice work. Did your exhaust fail or is the change to a Y pipe for better sound or performance?

Thanks! Muffler was in good shape I just wanted better sound. Getting rid of that big thing really freed up a lot of space under the engine cover as well - makes it a lot easier to access the various things on the back side too. |

Thanks for all the nice comments! Finally - just about done with this whole project
Got busy again tonight and finished up the rest. I had been planning on cleaning out the fuel tank since the rest of the boat was so dirty/ grimy and did that first thing. Good thing too because there was at least a half inch of .... well I don't know what - chunks & flakes of some black pulpy stuff settled at the bottom of the pick-up. It's a wonder it could siphon anything out of that well without clogging up the screen! With that done and installed I finished the blower and bilge pump then moved on to filling the fluids. Hmmm..... wouldn't you know it. I could have sworn I had a new filter and trans fluid. So picking those up on the way home tomorrow and I should have it ready to turn the key for the first time! Think it'll be beer time first though |

I think you could make JQ really jealous if you put a red oil filter on that thing |
