What is the consensus on using foam rollers to apply epoxy. I thought I would use them on the bigger ply floor sections. I did one coat with them, and I am a hater.
Secondly, how many coats should I apply to either side of the floor?

Mike, all it will take is one overheat that melts a hose and you'd be wishing that you'd made those compartments accessible! Since youre doing the panel anyways, it seems like a no-brainer to me. It would also save you from adding the angle brackets for support- though Im sure that method would work just fine since CC started using it in '89 when they put the single exhaust between the main stringers. I cant see any reason to add more than a single coat of epoxy over the wood before installing- but then again, I used a different method on my restores and glassed over my entire floor.

Chris, I decided to leave out the support piece between the main stringers for the rear floor section. The Tique originally had one, but I just dont see it as being necessary. My '90 doesnt have a support. 2 feet between supports under 3/4" ply is plenty.

yea and your cooler is usually on the small size but if it was Quinner's or my cooler you'd be in trouble after a couple outings.

Don't use the cheap gray foam roller covers from the hardware store - they dissolve!! The only ones I've found that work are the ones you get from the epoxy supplier. (yellow if West system) I would CPES (but I don't see your're using it) one coat and then one coat of epoxy (extra on the edges) It should then be one uniform sheen. Any sucked up spots will be dull and a extra coat should then be applied. (especially on the bottom side)

What happened to make you dislike them?

I did 2 coats, 3 on the edges on mine. I used a brush, pretty tedious job.

Mohair rollers have always been my friend, the mo's are never too happy about it though. If your going to use the aluminum channels do a good job sealing them to the stringer, water runs down the seam and sits on top then makes its way into the stringer and starts the rot, seal the whole thing with 5200 and you shouldnt have issues.

Pete,   I am using the yellow West ones. I guess it just seems so thin compared to the sturdy coats I have on all the structural boards that were brushed.
I may give it another go tonight. I just don't like how they roll on, etc.

Today I got a ton of little stuff done after spending the week pretty much just epoxting floorboards. I got my fuel tank installed, steering cable installed, battery switch, all major wiring and all stereo harnesses run. I finished the floorboards for the most part. I just have the rear center piece left to do.

I am going on a date with my lovely wife, and need to make this quick.

I do not recall seeing a photo of this in the past, so for everyone's Saturday night amusement, I present to you:

A grossly underestimated pool noodle installation. This is a whole case.
And I am out.

They look nice. I'm going foamless/noodleless. There are plenty here that think they are a must, but I think they will trap moisture. I'm probably in the minority on that.

True.   I still think you should have gone foamless and had an actual glass floor. Shame to cover up that nice of a job.

I would think the air gaps between them will allow air to circulate & dry out, at least between seasons. I don't think they would get saturated (otherwise they would't work very well in a pool), but could get moldy. Looks like a good plan to me.

I am confident about them not retaining moisture. I have 4 drains in the main stringers. Also, there will be a small opening in the front and rear as I am not sealing off the chmabers. Also, I am planning on moisture not really being able to get in.

The poolnoodle guy cannot ship me another case until after the inauguration. They are based in the DC area and said everything is at a standstill.

Looks Great. Im following in your footsteps but it will be hard to match your craftsmanship. Glad to finally see a picture of "noodles in action"

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your noodles from, how many did you order and how much did it cost? I'm doing a ski tique and I believe we have the same or similar hull (I know somebody knows for sure)That would be a huge help.

Hey Jeremy.

thanks for the compliment. I am guessing by your diagrams and attention to detail you will do great.
As I am in MN, the walmart, etc here do not have them in stock this time of year.
I got the noodles from www.poolcenter.com
$88 for a case of 24 delivered. That picture is a full case. I ordered a second today, and think I will have a couple left over to actually put to their intended use.
We'll see....    That is what I thought the first time.

Mike,
Couldn't you get the noodles all one color? It looks a little "busy" multi colored!!

The project is looking great! Did you ever calculate the noodle flotation?

Hollywood, I think the water will drain, but I don't see how air can circulate, so it seems that any moisture would not dry out.

It may not matter or maybe the flotation they add more than offsets the disadvantage of any moisture they create.

The lack of flotation is somewhat of a concern to me as I'm on a big lake, and I also plan on having my Mustang at Lake George in September. Lake George was pretty rough last year in the afternoon. There were also a lot of big boats that could easily swamp any of our boats if we weren't paying attention. From what I saw the big boats didn't seem too concerned about their wakes and any nearby little boats.

Pete,

Ha !
I asked and the guy wouldn't do it. I was trying to get all blue ones. And I was kind of relying on the discussion from Sanity's thread to evolve into a determination there.
I have to think 48 noodles will have some decent flotation. And a little sound dampening, as well.

I do live on a small lake and do not really plan to take it on a big lake other than GL in July. Not that I wouldn't, but if I am doing that, I would probably take my Super Air.

concrete supply houses sell 4x8 sheets of foam, its about 3" thick...you guys can use them to float, I'll use it to line the cooler lol,
really, I use it to cover our fan openings and it wasnt that expensive
just a thought.
it comes in one color too.

the noodles remind me of a guy at work, his father owned a car dealership in the 60's and 70's, he did warranty work on 2 cars, a 63 impala and another one of the same era, the guys at the factory put a ball bearing in the rocker panel and it rolled and made racket when you stopped or took off. the other one had a coke bottle in the rocker doing the same thing. funny i thought

On Sunday I spent the whole day sanding the dash. What a pain. We elected to paint as getting it to the gel was proving to be complete biatch. There were some holes that had been poorly patched in the past and I needed to fill about 8 that were there when I got it. Matching the white deck to a new white would be nearly impossible, and Barbara did not want black, so we went with a Interlux Brightside in medium blue. It is a bit lighter than the hull, but there is no connection point. It is a pretty close but not an exact match to the existing upholstery. With the carpet being a sahara sand beige or whatever it is, we think it will look pretty good. Definitely not original, but will do for now until we decide if we will re-gel the boat. Until Sunday it was flat primer black, and very poorly done, with the wrong paint. Regardless, it will be a huge improvement.

I do need to say that my wife painted it as I totally suck at that kind of stuff. She does not.

Mike,
If you do any more painting (or gel) I recommend using 3M fine line tape. The fine line is a poly tape designed to handle a solvent based paint and produce a very clean sharp paint edge. I hope you were able to get the blue "painters tape off without too much work.

I will get it off. For the most part the tape line is under the windshield so that doesn't matter. Along the sides there was already a sharp line/ridge from the previous paint job that I carefully ran it along. nice sharp exacto blade will do fine.

This may seem silly, but ....

I am going to put down my bow floor permanently tonite. I made a little time caspule to put in the area aft of the battery box. I assume this will never be seen again but thought it was fun.
I took a little parts tube like you get in the fastener aisle at Home Depot. It will be sealed waterproof (but shouldn't need to be, right?)
In it I put the following.

1968 Penny
2008 Penny
piece of foam (dry)
piece of fiberglass
printed brochure page from the ref. section
tag from West Systems container

I also put a note in it stating when and what I did to the boat, couple thank you's to my help, and that includes the members of CorrectCraftFan. My name, and where I plan to be later in my life, and a phone number.

I had a couple beers the other night, got a bit mushy about the boat and came up with the idea. I hope we have the boat til we are old, and then my kids have it. Who knows. Someday someone may chop this thing up and when all the noodles spill out, this will be amidst it.

Mike
