CCF was represented well before, during and after the race..
Great weekend and tons of fun with the gang The deep rudders came in No 7 Friday we started fooling around Zach has a clean beauty Then I started working on my faceplants Saturday race was on and 1st boat we saw was a ski nauti hauling ass and at the time leading the pack (came in 2nd at the end) Them came pfelger (from the folks I know) HW showing us how it's done Zach looking good Nice Fish showed up After the race we started doing disking Another HW shot but I have no idea what he is doing and sure don't wana know ;-0 The we went off to the local bar and ...well guess Fireballs sounded like a good idea at the time but not so much Sunday morning Anyway we did some more sun stuff today Steve footing behind his clean BFN Then we got Paul up on the short line Joe looking comfortable back there Me still thinking Fireballs were a bad idea... Then we got Paul up on the long line for the first time in his footing life. Nice job! Well and ya'll know how that ends... Brad enjoying another pull and riding through some nasty waves and still smiling on the other end! there were some nice boats out (tons of BFN's) The deep rudders doing a 6 man step of run (Zach is somewhere in the spray...well maybe he just took a fall and is excused) Official team pic |

Rolling back across ohio as we speak... Great weekend! Thoroughly exhausted from the skiing (and maybe the fireball too). Great meeting Steve (tullfooter) and crew, as well as Sebastian, Pat and Pirate Steve (86bfn). Some very nice boats in the mix! Had a blast, many thanks to all.
That 38mile race is seriously intense, Our motley crew did a hell of a job skiing, especially for a bunch of first timers. Definitely successful in terms of my 3 main goals: didn't get hurt, didn't break the boat, and didn't embarrass ourselves. We ended up 7th out of 12, just ahead of Pat's team and just behind Steve... Pretty happy with that. Big thanks to all my team mates- nice job boys! Also a huge thanks to our support crew- ready with the back up boat just in case, ha. Nice pics, Seb! |

Just rolling into New York. Awesome weekend. Awesome race. The team did a great job, especially our drivers Tim and Hollywood. The race is intense to ski let alone driving 40+ avoiding boats, people, and river obstacles.
Great to meet some more CCFans (Pirate Steve, Tullfooter and crew, Sebastian, Pat) and the buckethead teams. It's always a good time getting the CCFan group together. Nice pictures so far! Looking forward to seeing what else was captured. |

What an awesome weekend at the Buckethead barefoot race! our team deep rudders did a great job for a bunch of newbies to the race. The start is really intense but we got in sink and laid down some long runs, past a few teams after the 19 mile turn for our respectable 7th place finish. Thanks to all the boat owner for making these events happen! we are all looking forward to running the race next year.

Fellas, first I would like to thank the race organizer, Mr. Buckethead himself (AKA Brian McMillan). He and his wife Cara (She gets most of the race set up) are two of the most gracious hosts I've met and generally just a pleasure to be around. They put together one of the coolest things I have been a part of to date. Also, huge thanks to all the local volunteers and Brian's family for the beautiful "Camp Ground".
Friday night Dave Hart put is beautiful 88 on the table for us to completely soak with our practice runs. Everyone put in their two cents about in boat race procedure and in an hour or so we had a well oiled process for footing and pick ups. Tim and HW were driving having the most experience pushing the footer hull to its limits. When it came time for the big show, TRBenj laid it on the line with the 79 sporting its fresh M750 quick fuel. The boat never once hesitated to perform all the duties we asked of it. As the other guys have said so far, the start of the race is probably one of the most intense things I have ever done. The horn sounds and 12 skiers flop in the water as you hear 12 American V8s crack to life, ropes get tight then its game on. 12 boats side by side at 40-50 mph with a footer in tow is one of the coolest and most intimidating things I have seen. The pre race was full of banter between the teams but it was dead quiet when they started the count down to launch. The tone in the boat was quiet and focused other than rooting the footer in tow on encouraging a longer run or congratulating smashing through some rough water. People lined the entire 19 mile route in boats and on land/bridges cheering as each boat went screaming by. We only botched two starts during the race but that was due to those being starts in the roughest water during the race. I was a little more optimistic about what the outcome would be than the rest of the guys were but in the end we were all surprised and extremely happy with our performance. Everyone on the team skied extremely well with nobody having a bad run. Our run back was much faster than the run up as we were reeling boats in and spitting them out with some nice water. We even got in a nice little drag race with the Felgner rig! Basically, even if you don't foot you should see the event at some point. Thanks to Brad, Dave, Tim, Scott, and Hollywood for coming to the event and performing like the studs they are. Thanks to Tim and Dave for supplying their mean machines. Thanks to everyone who came out to watch and participate in the Sunday activities as well. Never a bad time is had with the CCF dudes. Also, it was nice to meet everyone that I met for the first time too! |

So during the 38 miles, how many times did each person ski? What was the average time a footer was up per set?
Surely the winners didn't win because of a faster boat. Did they win based on individual/team footer endurance. I.e. fewer footer changes? |

My expectations were far exceeded for a group of inexperienced racers. Daryl and John would have been proud! Tim's 79 ran awesome, the ski runs were long. We finished undead AND one boat ahead of my "top five of the bottom five" prediction. There is definitely room for easy improvement. I'm ready to do it again next weekend but sadly we have to wait a year. I'm thinking we mix up the Saturday team incorporating the Sunday guys and run our own hungover-head-to-head CCF race Sunday. Muddy Mommys VS Hot Bananas. Lots of fun skiing and meeting all the other footers there.
Way to go gun-driver on his first LL foot run! That is a major accomplishment. Dave's 88 made me realize how badly we need a new distributor on Johnny's rig. That thing pulls like hell for a stock boat. Some booms and a pick-up boat for next year would be nice. |

I believe we went trough 4 rotations during the race. We had some runs cut short by bridge construction or rough water but I generally think we didn't go much less than a mile. Some had super long runs and others shorter depending on the conditions.
The faster teams won probably because of more experience on the pick ups but generally they can foot extremely fast. The Corvette boat pulled skiers around 48 mph where we were in the 39-42 mph range. The guys from Texas in the Sanger probably footed 52 mph. (first place team) |

Rumor has it, that one of the footers behind the suped up 502 ski was clocked at 57mph at one point in time. Looooong runs and speed is the ticket.
The fastest team ran the course in 54mins. Pretty nice average if you do the math. The deep rudders looked strong and skied through some tough waters right where we had the backup boat. Lots of downed skiers in that area due to bad water but our tough guys went right through it. |

I would like to do the pick-up boat thing. I could certainly keep up with you guys in the Bass Nautique. Pretty sure we could run some easy to rig ladder to make climbing in easier. |

So should there be something in the plans for Badin Lake? If we were to start at the boat launch and head straight across the lake to the Town of Badin and then back it would be much shorter but would present some challenges - or leave the launch and head to the railroad trestle and back.- a bit longer but right down the main channel - would be good to consider for Sunday morning for optimum skiing conditions

With exception to the 2-3 fast ass boats. Clean runs and quick transitions are key. You see the first 4 teams this year all had footers that footed the distance to the bridge project. Getting out front like that makes the first half water pretty nice. The tough stuff is that last half mile or so to the turn boat. River is narrow and when your running the middle of the pack there is usually a gew boats in there. I think we always botch a couple starts in there. We ourselves will add a footer or 2 to our team. This is the second year for just a 4 person team and it can be tough. Were not getting younger either. Were darn near one of the older teams but love the fun. Boat ran good and with the heat issue fixed she ran nice a cool to. Good fun!

What everybody said above that was just to much fun.
I just got done checking in to my local AA house. As always three days is to short but my liver says its two days to long. Great seeing everyone again and a big thanks to Steve and Lance for the footing time off that beautiful 86 bfn. While sitting along the river with the pickup boat all I could say was HOLY CRAP as those guys flew by at 50+!!! It was really cool hearing those big V8's screaming up the river with skiers in tow can't wait to do it again next year |

I didn't get a chance to watch any other teams transition but it didn't sound like anyone was doing anything too crazy in that dept... I'm sure we could improve but I think we had a decent system. Judging by the way we made up some ground in the back half of the race, I don't think our transitions were hurting us much. Longer runs and faster skiing speeds seem to be the trick for the really fast teams (top 3). I can't imagine 4-6 teams were running significantly faster than us (they were running nearly stock boats and I was skiing most of our guys 42) but I bet their runs were longer on average. Cleaning up our transitions a bit and extending our average run length would be good goals at significant improvements. Getting towards the front early would be key I think, we fought a lot of rough water on the first half of the course- it was much better once we got more spread out on the return leg.
Honestly though, for a first time group, I was thoroughly impressed by everyone's skiing. 4 runs a piece means we averaged over 1.5miles per, and considering there were 4 runs cut short by no wake zones, turn around, etc, plus 2 duffed starts, that's really pretty good. I bet we weren't off a 2mile average per run with those factored in. Our moving average, not counting the 5min refuel was over 30mph, which isn't bad at all, considering we stopped and transitioned 24 times. The winning team averaged over 46mph, which is flat out incredible, ha. Those Texas guys had a hot Sanger with a 409 and the #2 team was pulled by Jim Braggs Python '99 SN. I can't imagine doing this race in a non-bfn, ha. Crazy. |

I was wondering what kind of runs you guys would have. 1.5 mile average seems pretty good and about what I would expect. I've seen some vids of guys going 5 minutes or better. In the past, and I just went back and checked to remind myself, at the 20 mile Austin race a few years ago, the winning team "Top gun" who I think is pretty well regarded as the best, did the 20 miles in 21:55, which if my math is right is a 55 mph average, including transitions. But I also think I recall reading that they will do the whole 20 miles in like 4 legs/3 transitions. Hard to believe at those speeds their feet last that long. I guess they are regarded as a "pro" team though. Not sure what distinguishes a pro team from an amateur team. But anyway. You guys did great. I'm impressed. Sadly, I don't think that is an old man sport, just in terms of the endurance expectations.

Yeah, there was a wide range of ages in this thing. Plenty of guys beat us who were 1-2 decades older than me. Top gun won yesterday and is legit. They said their 409 Sanger ran 57, I'm guessing they ran 50 or so in the race? Probably pinned... Moving average over 42 is pretty fast in a race that long with a gas stop.

I heard Heath say they could only ski at 55mph. They were 2 mph slower than Bragg's Python SN (not stock?) and he wasn't happy about it. I walked over by them at lunch. He also told me they at once slowed to 38mph and discovered the drain plug worked out, which he found and put back in with footer still in tow.
