To anyone interested, I canceled my reservation at the Bayview this morning. We'll be staying at the campground instead.

So, if one were to fly into Green Lake is Chicago OHare the best way to go and rent a car? How many hours from Chicago, 3.5? Are there always hotel rooms available in town if being on the lake is not important?

Bruce, it is 2 hours from Milwaukee, less than 2 hours from Madison and about 3.5 from Chicago O'Hare depending on traffic. I'd pick any of the airports depending on price, number of stops and the departure/arrival times.

When I fly, I always look at Milwaukee and O'Hare. Often, I'll take the non-stop from O'hare and drive vs. flights with stops from MKE.

Places off the lake shouldn't be a problem. The Green Lake Hotel is near HWY 23 and advertises $69/night. Worst case there should be something in Ripon.

Last minute call?

It sure has been awesome weather as of late here in SE Wisconsin. Last Summer was horrible, cold, rainy, and crap. I would go as far as saying it wasn't ever really summer like weather all year.

A far as airports, I would try to steer clear of O hare and simply fly into MKE or Green Bay. If you hit Chicago traffic, you can add hours to your travel time. Milwaukee traffic can be a little hold up, but nothing like a traffic jam in Chicago.

I'm thinking I can get my boat up to GL for either Saturday, or Sunday. Probably not both days. I'm guessing Saturday since more people will be around all day.   I am close enough that I can simply drive up launch the boat and meet the rest of the CCF crew for the day.

Tom,
You obviously haven't driven much South of MKE on 94' The highway from the boarder North is far worse than coming out of OHare and going North.. 294 is clear until it breaks down to 94.. arg, traffic sucks in there.

Yes, come up Saturday and just launch. You'll see a bunch of boats heading out to the sand bar late Morning.. !!!

Bruce,
I still got some free seats in the car I rented at Chicago airport.
I'm landing in O'hare at 1.15 PM on the 15th and drive back to O'hare on the 19th (monday).
Roger (UK1979) also rented a car at Chicago airport and drives back to O'hare on sunday.
Roger and I will make the trip to GL together. So if you want a seat in one of our cars, you're very welcome!

Kristof, thank you. Right now, I'm in the fanagling stage. If I can pull it off, I'll likely have 2 passengers in tow. I would like to stay in the village and not have to drive.

Not only do the guys have 2 cars to choose from but type of drive calm drive into GL with Kristof or a little scary with me when I forget to drive on the other side of the road, which in turn could affect how much beer you need at GL.

Moj,

I steer clear of Chicago as much as possible.   Every time I have gone past 6 Flags while driving my own car, I have run into traffic. maybe it's just me;)

As far as boat launches, which one(s) would you recommend? I have never been on GL before.

Thanks,

Tom

Mojo,

It was great to meet you at the St. John's River run. Do not worry about my virtue. I lost mine in College over 24 years ago.

Tom,
Naa you're pretty much right !! They made the highway about 5 lanes in either direction and it's still packed down there...

There are several boat ramps in Green Lake... The main marina launch is where the the fun is (this is if you want to wait and get frustrated).. There is a launch off County A just East of town, or down at County Park on the far South side on Country K...

Depending what time you want to get there, and if it's Sat morning, you'll see both the speed run events as well as some skiing off the new SN200 demo.. Sat afternoon is the float party and weather permitting, we'll have a beach volleyball set up going !!!

There will be CCfaners there from Wed night to Mon typically... Sunday we usually lay around in the bay and lick our wounds from the Goose experience the night before !!

Come on out. My cell number is 630-842-4124. Feel free to call if you need anything !!!

Thanks Moj!

I will definitely give you a call. My number is 262-707-6288, so you know who the heck is calling.

The Fiance is all aboard with having a fun day on the lake:) I will try my best to get her up as early as possible.

Maybe next year we will camp for the whole weekend with the rest of the CCF peeps.

If We didn't have puppy training classes on Thursday nights for the next 6 weeks, we would plan on the Thursday night party too.

Best advice I could offer is "Steer Clear" of Tom's advice regarding travel.

Moj you are right, 294 from O'Hare North was not that bad before however now with all those new lanes it Flies, in fact should probably warn Kristof and Roger that if they drive at the speed limit on that stretch of road they will feel like they standing are still!

Bruce,
I'm not sure if you went through the process of hotel hunting, but there are three hotels within walking distance to the park/ramp:

Bayview Hotel
Lakeside Hotel
Greenlake INN: well about 1/3rd of a mile
Also the Green Lake Cottages

You can also have an RV or travel trailer dropped off at the camp ground if prefered. Several members have had a good experience doing this. The camp ground is a bock away from downtown as well..

If I can help, just let me know..

the traffic isn't an issue just try and not plan on driving through it during rush hours, and have plenty of singles and change for the tolls and it'll be fine just go the flow and ignore the speed limit signs until you get outside of the city.
