Greg,

Can't hurt to ask. To give your invitation a little context, here is an email from me to John and from John to me regarding Reid's gathering last fall. After the event, I sent him the video I made of the event and he thought it looked like a pretty good time. Just wanted to let you know that he is aware of us lunk-heads.

Those of you old timers who have an interest in barefooting may recall the name John Gillette. Long before the internet, he wrote the definitive guide to barefooting. I reached out to him a couple years ago and followed up this morning. Here is my note and his response. Great guy. A bit of trivia on the V-drive BFN.

Hi Larry,

Nice to hear from you and welcome to the South!

The Correct Craft gathering on Lake Norman sounds wonderful, and I would LOVE to be part. However, I will be in Orlando October 5-6 for a Sea World Water Ski Show Reunion. It is disappointing that I can't attend the Correct Craft gathering in my back yard!

Please tell folks it was an honor to be Product Manager for Ski Nautique and Barefoot Nautique from 1984 to 1990, and that it brings me great satisfaction that I may have made some small contribution to their enjoyment of their boats.

Interestingly, in about 1989 sitting around a Correct Craft management team meeting, I presented the bold idea of using a V-drive in the Barefoot Nautique to increase it's speed and open up the cockpit. No tournament inboard company was using a V-drive, though Correct Craft had back in the '60s. The plant manager dreaded the idea...more difficult from a manufacturing standpoint. There were chuckles and rolls of they eyes, but the idea developed and went into production in about 1990. Soon afterward Mastercraft came out with their Maristar V-drive, and the trend took off. Amazing how V-drives are the bulk of inboards today!

Please let me know the next time you are in town. I would still enjoy connecting.

John

John,

My name is Larry Hineline, you may or may not recall that I contacted you a few years ago, asking if you had any copies of your book that you might be able to send me. The book was my, as it was so many people’s, bible on learning new barefooting moves in the 80s, and through the years and many moves, I had lost mine. You sent me a new one which I very much appreciate. I mentioned during one of our couple conversations that although I lived in MA, I got to NC on occasion, which I have through the years. But now, in reaching a fairly long term goal, I am now a resident, over in the Pinehurst area. I had also mentioned that if I was ever in the area, I might reach out to you to see if we could get together for a pull and you said to let you know.

Next weekend, (Oct 6-7) a number of us Correct Craft Fans ( correctcraftfan.com ) guys are getting together on Lake Norman in Mooresville. I was wondering if there is any chance at all that you might be interested in getting together with a bunch of boat/water sport enthusiasts. As a rule, we are vintage Correct Craft guys (60s, 70s 80s) but there are some new boat guys too. In fact the host of the gathering is one of the owners of Race City Marine, although this is by no means any kind of “official” event, just friends getting together. For the most part, we are all just recreational skiers, footers, riders, but we have a good time.    I would really enjoy the opportunity to meet you, maybe even foot a little together. I know you are not a real regular any more, but I did read someplace where you still like to get out once or twice a year. Maybe this could be one of those outings.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks again for your book, great memories of a lot of great times on the water, along with some great spills.

-Larry

Sure I remember Brett Wing, John...another one of the old school guys. The Austrailians dominated barefoot competition in those days.

Yup, I'll have the Gillette books available. Hope those White Lake plans gel. It'll be fun having you guys stop by.

Larry you hafta get JG out there with you!

I know I'm lucky to ski with Willie, of course that comes with the pleasure of having my driving constantly micro managed LOL

Willie gives orders faster than you can listen, while at the dock, while in the boat, on the platform, in the water, 75 feet away at the end of the rope, sometimes he's giving orders even as you are coming to the end of the run.

Seb- you need a clinic with ADV and a lesson or a few from whoever is at KSO's school, hopefully Keith or David....you would learn a ton of stuff.

Lane Bowers training video is probably the most up to date and it is a good one to have and use.

The Groens have that cool video contraption that swings around the skier it is very cool and gives great angles.

I would say like Larry said "entertaining" is what to shoot for on the vids, try to come up with anything unique, use your imagination and think outside the box, Siepel has a video that uses a James Bond theme, it was corny but still funny and entertaining. Surprise and astonish.
Thats all I got.

I'll keep you informed if I hear who may come out here but actually since nationals will be in CA at Diablo Shores I know there will be clinics held prior to nationals...no I don't know exact date yet.

yes, he did a sideslide too but not "perfect", I wonder who did it first? the 2nd edition of Barefooting has pics of Scarpa sidesliding on the boom on a BFN. ADV perfected the sideslide youtube put it in our faces. I'm still trying to teach it to Willie.

That's a great video, tho I'm not sure how or what the kneeboarder is doing in there. I was waiting for him to kick it off and take off on his feet. The toe hold back step off was very cool as was the ski to back. We oooo and ahhhh a lot about ADV, and he was kind of the leader for a while, but lots of folks are catching up with him, but when you look at a video from over 20 years ago and see most of what he does, maybe he's not such a big deal. although I was impressed by two of ADVs recent developments, the AirDV to backwards and the dolpin start to backwards.I guess his brother's over the head 360 is pretty cool to, but having your boom set so you can practically dangle from it takes away some of the thrill for me to watch.

I seem to recall Scarpa claiming side slides as his once when he was poo-pooing ADV, but I could be wrong on suggesting he was the first.

I think the first Hot Rockin feet was older than the 90's. somewhere between 85-89 that was our heyday.

Does anyone know this guys name?

He and Mike ran some traveling clinics and we skied a couple of years with them both on the Chicoppe river in Massachusetts. Best skiing days of our lives. They used 2 outboard Mastercrafts with Yamaha's.

Happened to me once. I made a phone call once to inquire about a water sports event. The phone was answered by Jennifer Leachman, so it was fun having a brief conversation with her. (She also, unknowingly, boosted herself off me when she crossing over a ropeline at the event) I realize water skiers arent way up there on the famous celebrity list, and many folks on here have crossed paths with some of the greats, but its still fun when it happens.
