DO you still have the pylon? I have a 1998 ski nautique and I need a ski pole. Let me know how much you are selling it for if you still have it

I am getting ready to put my 1979 Southwind 20 back in the water after a 3 year overhaul. I was thinking of getting a tower but really dont like the look. I like the idea of the extended pylon but have never used one. does anyone have an opinion on them? Do they fit any boat? How much do they cost? are they easily removed?

Matt,

Welcome. I am guessing your boat does not have a factory ski pylon. What is typically discussed here are extended pylons that slide down over existing factory pylons. Some guys who have ring and finger hooks at the top of their pylons use a "flite-pipe". No longer made, but available thru ebay and such. It clamps to, rather than slides over factory pylon. A Tachyon adaptor will also do the trick there.

Anyway, extended pylons are fine, tons of people here have them. Good alternative if you dont want to muck up a vintage boat with a tower or spend the money on one. But if you don't have a factory pylon, then that doesnt do you any good. An alternative is a universal pylon made for I/Os or outboards. I knew someone who had one. You screw a plate to the floor and this thing mounts to it and has two solid support poles that lead off to the gunnels, aft of the pole. Here is an example. They come off and on easily with removable pins.
univ. pylon

Good luck. Let us konw how you make out.

Thanks Larry,

Did I say '79 i meant '77 I was born in '79, anyway she's back I took her out for the first time in over three years this last weekend and it was Great!

My set up is just like your and also has the ring and finger. I was wondering if theses extenion pylons caused unwanted stress to existing pylon mount or does the support cable take care of that? I think this is deffinetly the route Im going to go. Thanks for the advise.

Matt,

I was surprised the southwind has a pylon, thats good that it does. Maybe the best way to go is the tachyon, that way you can get a slide on extended pylon plus keep your ring and finger, which many people like to do.

tachyon

Although an option is to remove the ring & finger, but by what I hear that can be a nightmare of a job. Mine was already replaced by that nice turned fitting when I bought my boat.

You are correct. The cables, when properly tightened, take the backward stress off the pylon. The pylon will come with a warning not to pull to the sides too much (no greater than 45-degrees) and not to slalom off the extended pylon. Most come with a lower hook for skiing so you dont have to take the pylon down, but if you go with the tachyon, that won't be a problem anyway.
