As I read through these posts on an almost daily basis, it has occured to me that several members own there own business. I was just curious as to what kind of diversity we have out there.

I wish I could say that I will start the conversation, but I am still working for the man. I will tell you what I do though. I am in package development for a company that makes haircare products that are sold mostly to salons. So basically, I kind of develope the way the shampoo gets from our manufacturing, into a bottle, in a box, on a pallet, on a truck and to a DC.

I am sure there are a ton of interesting jobs people do, in our little community here, to pay for our common vice!

They must pay you army guys pretty well over there. Good for you!

I don't know exactly what they pay over here, but I know it is not enough for what they do. I don't know how you guys can do it.

I'm a FAA licensed AMT (mechanic) working for Delta Airlines in the Engine Composite Shop. I repair engine fairings, sound absorbing liners, fan containment cases, engine cases etc. LOTS of fiberglass work. Throw in some metal honeycomb, metal bonding repair too.

Job has come in handy as I've learned alot about fiberglass, and epoxies. ( And I thought superglue was some good stuff). Repaired a wakeboard or two along with some other stuff.

Prior to that I worked in aircraft systems in the overhaul dept.

Well we do get paid, but won't get rich with it. But as so many soldiers in both our countries, I too do it because I'm a patriot.
I only wish that it would be appreciated more by some people who take their freedom for granted...

But, that has been elaborately discussed in another topic...

Work with Engineers and Customers on early release products for Cisco in the Storage Area Networking environment. Mostly Fiber Channel stuff.
I was planning on retiring on April 30th of this year but accepted a new position and agreed to work at it for another year before I depart. Not sure I got the better end of that deal...

Military first. Left after a not too fun Viet Nam trip..see the world!! HA!. Bummed around, raced motorcycles professionally, left due to low pay in the sixties and early seventies. Trained in hydraulics, SCR electronics and LPG fuel systems, worked in the forklift and equipment industry for twenty years, good pay, lots of pain and a few injuries. Semi-retired. While living on my Pacemaker motor yacht, where we still are, the marina asked me to work. Went to OMC and Yamaha training, worked on all the inboard systems for the next fifteen years, never did like working on ob's. Keep trying to completely retire but the marina still needs help from time to time and I own several boats, off road vehicles, etc. Have to work sometimes to keep up the bad habits. Gave up on the Grecian...white goes well with a tan. Forgot to mention that the only thing I never stopped all those years was that I skied or barefooted every year from 1951 'til the 90's when I thought I was too old to ski. WRONG answer, I'm doing it again.
I watched my father run his own business...worked for others. Listen to eric regarding self employment. Long hours, less time to ski.

You WERE talking about your hair, right quinner? Reminds of the big-bellied Chicagoan who when at the doctor was asked, "when was the last time you saw your penis?", and the guy tells the doc, "oh, several yrs ago." "So why don't you diet?" (heard as 'dye it'), asks the doc. "Why, what color is it now?", asked quinner.

And thanks Jbear for trying to lift my heavily damaged ego, as I know he was taking a stab at the ReidDome.

As for work, I'm still partners in a construction company which builds and services cellular facilities. I gravitated to this 18 yrs ago as a transition from an architectural career where I was doing design work for BellSouth wireless facilities.
