Couple questions on lubrication & General Maintenance:
05' 206 with Excalibur 330hp 350SBC
Crankcase & Trans oil are fresh, FCC filter new and impeller good

-My rudder has a Zerk fitting, what would be the recommended grease to use here?

-Read that the throttle linkage should be lubricated, with what and at what locations?

-Is there any maintenance/lubrication that can be done to the steering cable/system?

-Ran great when put away, any preventive Maint. that should be done with the ignition system, 3yrs 200+hrs and still all the factory original components.

-Spark arrestor, should it be cleaned with solvent, compressed air or other?

-Eric, you will be happy to know I plan on checking my alignment, well Hollywood said he would show me how that is.

Most likely putting the boat in this weekend and wanted to get everything done while still on the trailer.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

What your going to take it easy on HW and use lube, wow what is the world coming to.

inspect under the cap of the dist look for carbon tracks on the sides and top of the inside of the cap, if there is a lot of corrosion around the post for the wire terminals then replace it. Remove the rotor and look on the underside in the center where it makes contact with the center of the cap/coil lead and look for a burnt/stressed area in the plastic in the middle and if the edges of the rotor tip are rounded and not sharp it's time to replace it. Your's should have electronic advance and not mechanical so that really all you need to do on the ignition system.

try some marine grade wheel bearing ube for the rudder and some pennetrating spray to lube the cables, WD-40 PB blaster and the likes.

spray down the arrestor with carb cleaner and blow it out, and your good, might check a spark plug or two and see how they are holding up again look for rounded tips on the electrode sticking up from the ceramic insulator.

Chris, I think it's time to trade in the boat on a new one! Just think of all the work you wouldn't need to do on the boat!

Just give the zerk on the rudder one short pump. It doesn't need much and too much will jam it up.

Thanks guys!

Pete, hoping to keep this one until Maddie is old enough to give it to her. She's still mad at me for selling the Paragon!

Is it important to use marine grease? Synthetic or not?

Any thoughts on the steering cable? IIRC there typically are no lube points unless there is one under the helm.

Chris, I really don't think the rudder port grease type is that critical. It doesn't need to say "marine" on it as we all know the only thing that does is jack up the price! It should have some resistence to water. Common wheel bearing grease with a NLGI rating of #2 is fine.

CQ,
I've got a zerk fitting on my rudder and all I've used on it since I've owned it is the standard grease that I had in my grease gun for lubing the suspension parts on my vehicles. It only took like half a pump every fall when I did the winterizing. Never had to touch it other than that.

As for the steering cable, I've heard that some guys lube it but there aren't any specific lube points on it. The only way that I would know of to lube it would be to completely disconnect it from the helm and the rudder, pull it a few out and put a little grease on it and then pull it back from the other end and do the same thing. Basically, you're only able to lube a couple feet on each end. I don't think that you can actually pull the cable all the way out of the sheath and then push it back through, but maybe somebody else knows for sure. Even if you could do that, it would be a friggin' mess and trying to keep the cable from hitting the ground and getting all kinds of crud on it would be a nightmare.
I had to replace my cable at someplace around 600HRs. I now have almost 1300HRS. and that cable is still doing just fine without ever touching it since I installed it. I've personally never lubed it at all. When the steering starts to get a little tight or have rough spots in between steering stops, it's time to replace it. Maybe others do something differently.

P.S. Wow, after previewing this post, HW is gonna have a filed day with it!!!! ROFLOL!!!!
When people run down to the lake to see what's making that noise, you've succeeded.

You guys are making it too easy lately. GottaSki and M3Fan underhanded a few last week as well.

Yeah Chris, I'll be by on Saturday night for the lube and pump job. After that it should be cranking smooth.

I knew I definitely left some low hanging fruit with the shaft and male pilot questions.

Quinner, don't people who buy brand new loaded up boats just buy another new boat when it comes time to do any maintenance on them?

Thanks for the grease info!
Steering cables have always baffled me, the Paragon had the original cable, 12yrs old, when sold and it was still fine, the cable on the 99' was pretty bad after just 5yrs/500hrs. Have made it a point on the 05' to exercise, crank it back and forth, the cable every couple weeks during layup, will see if that makes any difference.

Mark, economy size?

Joel, wish any of us could be so lucky!
