a guy sends me a trans, we check it in including marking the pump for rotation on each one.
his customer supplied an engine which he installed and it ends up being a lefty, he fires the boat and nothing happens. he calls me and is insisting $350.00 back for his labor to pull the engine again cause i didnt call him and ask which rotation his trans should be. I know its business but was curious what others on the site would do |

Eric,
Again it's an "accommodation" type of call. He, being the mechanic should know what rotation the motor is, subsequently, he should have matched it with the right trans. Obviously he was mix-matching components, and if all your job was to rebuild the trans, and you achieved that, I would tell them to go scratch. If he's a good client, and could potentially bring in some good business, the best I would do is split it with him... Always something huh Eric???? Good luck on making him happy... Moj' |

I think Mojo hit it right on the head. I am not in business for myself, but if I was, I would ask myself if this guy is giving me enough business to cover the $350.
Is he expecting you to change the rotaion of the trans for free too? |

Eric, how many times have people given you a rotation direction, but they told you the direction from the front instead of the rear?

If I rebuilt it the same as it came in,and had no orders to change the pump direction. Then it would be his mistake.Once I had him agree to that I'd offer to help him out on the labor as a one time rebate.Do you think he even knew that it could be reversed?I did this same thing once, and as confusing as the BW info is I always check it out now.

If I was given a trans to rebuild and no instructions to the contrary, I'd make sure it operated in the same direction as it did when I got it. I agree with all the other posts, you didn't do a thing wrong. The assumption would be that the person who sent it knew what he's doing, you didn't have the boat there, HE did.....what to do depends on the circumstances. I'm glad I don't have to make that decision but I'm sure, whatever it is, you'll make the right one.

I look at it this way, he is probably charging his customer $70.00 per hour give or take, he should know what he is doing for the hourly rate, and i thought about a couple times last nite and thought, why should i pay for his mistake?
i have forgotten to flip the pump back around in the past after i was done testing (spins only to the left) and always accomadated the problem. my mind is made up Tim if it is questionable i call and correct and make the END user understand, the mechanic getting the $70.00 per hour should also understand...its part of the job. he should charge his customer the extra |

Eric, with the above info I wouldn't pay for his mistake either BUT I would make darn sure I changed my check in paperwork to include that question so it never happens again.

pump rotation is always noted first when its pulled out of the box. my paperwork has model, serial number, pump rotation,
you can imagine i have had problems in the past (5 years ago) and thats why i came up with the paperwork. It wasnt my mistake it came in as a lefty and left here as a lefty, pretty cut and dry |

im not crying, i just didnt understand how this guy could call me and want 350.00 back, i never ever had to pull one of these engines to get a trans out....and being a marine mechanic and not the boat owner, he should cover all his bases

Ok, I'll bite. You did nothing wrong and it's not your fault but it's still a problem isn't it. All I'm saying is maybe verifying as opposed to assuming what rotation is req'd would be a good way to avoid this from ever happening again. You know with customers you can't assume anything because you'll be wrong every darn time. I'd rather avoid a conflict than to try to prove to a customer that he's wrong because it will cost me one way or another in the end. Now don't go getting mad at me Man because I've been right where you are and it ain't fun. |

I think that you did the right thing and it was his fault for not telling you that the new motor was a lefty. That's the problem with society today. ALWAYS trying to blame somebody else for your mistakes. I do agree with alan in that you may want to have a checklist or some indication on the paperwork that the customer wants a lefty or righty. If its documented then he has no grounds for complaints. That's why we sign for everything here at work so no Questions may arise to who did it or how.
On that note; Eric is there anything that you need sent with a Tranny when we ship it.Notes, hardware,? |

After further review;
I think I'd offer a credit against his next rebuild of maybe 200 dollars. That way I might keep his business, make him happy even though I did everything correct. Munday |

thats exactly what i told him Munday, he had no idea which way the engine spun until i spoke with him and he told me the trans is doing nothing, and i explained to him the differences.
as i said im not crying and if it was the boat owner trying to get his way thru doing this i would've helped. I really just got a laugh at it, im sitting here thinking i paid my dues and im not going to pay his live and learn, i bet he never does this again |
