    Posted: December-09-2008 at 12:31pm
I have a 2004 ZR6 that has the starter located in the typical GM location which is on the lower Stb side of the engine.

The bellhousing has a provision for a top mounted starter. Has anyone converted to the top mounted starter and if so does it require a different flywheel? Any information and part numbers will be appreciated.

Two reasons. This is a 23 Fish Nautique. It is all but impossible to remove the starter with the engine in the boat as it sits very close the the bilge. And for that same reason it is very easy to get the starter wet with bilge water. I have the engine out of the boat so now is the time to make the change.

if the motor is reverse rotation then all you need to do is get a standard rotation unit and mount it in the top spot assuming that the unit will also be mounted on the other side of the flywheel.

the unit should be sealed and if water gets into the bilge it should not effect the starter.

Im pretty sure thats not the case- Ive never heard of a reverse rotation ZR6 (GM 6.0L).

Well... the starter is not really sealed. The bendix drive needs to extend out of the front of the starter to engage the flywheel so it is subject to water. I have the starter off and apart and beleive me water has found its way inside the armature area as well.

sorry Tim missed that was focusing on Fish nautique and forgot it's a repower.

Gary you need to invest in an automatic bilge because if you are getting that much water into the boat that's not good. But if you need to swap then get a reverse rotation GM starter and go to town got rocket science it's just a start and as long as the flywheel rotates in the same direction that's all that matters.

Already have 2 automatic pumps. The boat would sink without them as everything drains into the bilge. Besides, you would be suprised how low a 6.0 sits as compared to the original Ford power. It does not take all that much water to get to the starter in this configuration.

Gary,
Have you tried to see if your starter will physically fit in the other mounting and the bendix lines up with the ring gear? If so, then you would just need the opposite rotation. Probably wouldn't luck out and be that easy!! I'm not sure but can a starter rotation be reversed? A trip to a auto/electric shop may give you a idea! Wondering if it's a different armature or if the polarity is simply reversed in the field or armature. The opposite polarity reverses a industrial DC permanent or shut wound motor!

Call up PCM and see if they have a starter for the other location.

The original starter won't work in the upper location. In addition to the wrong rotation the method of attachment is totally different. No way the lower design starter will bolt into the upper location. PCM does not have a starter listed (for the upper location), however, Crusader does list the starter used in the upper location on their 6.0 engines. They also show a different flywheel for the upper location.

I'm about 99% certain these Crusader parts will work on the 6.0 PCM. I was just curious to see if anyone had done this so I could compare part numbers to see if my assumptions are correct.

In case anyone is curious the PCM part numbers for the starter and flywheel (lower mount) are RA122019 for the starter and RA138016 for the flywheel.

The Crusader part numbers for the upper location starter is RA122009 and the corresponding flywheel is RA138017.

The URL's for the PCM parts manual is http://www.pcmengines.com/pdfs/manuals/parts/6.0/L510014.pdf
and the URL for the Crusader parts manual is http://www.crusaderengines.com/manuals/L510018.pdf

Gary, fyi, this is not on the starboard side of the motor. It’s the port side, meaning the non drivers side
