I know all ya'll up north might not think a couple of inches of snow is a big deal but here in Baton Rouge, Louisiana its pretty unusual so when i got a call at 5:30 this morning from my Mom I figured she was calling to see if I was up studying for finals, which I wasn't, but it was snowing! I took a couple pictures on my phone for all you other southerners who might be wanting a little snow.

Looking off my balcony this morning this is the most snow i have seen in Baton Rouge in my 20 years

My friend Jimmy's 2000 Malibu Response, I told him not to park it there, my boat didn't get any snow on it

Peter I think all of us northerners get the creeps out of all the snakes and gators they've got down there. On Sebago, when we're out in deep water and all you can see is black, we like to remind the newbies in the water about the 36 inch Togues that are lurking around.

Did you get my email the other day? I've lost your phone number.

Mike, that looks like 1998. You guys got it a lot worse than we did. My power was out in Portland until Sunday night. It wasn't even bad around here. I think all the CMP guys were down your way. Sebago was spared too, the boats are fine. How about yours?

I did lose my computer though. I'm getting my new one up and running. What a PIA.

My house was down to 50 by Saturday afternoon. Temps that evening were going into the single digits. I started burning wood in my fireplace which was helping a little, when a friend called and said he had a 14kw generator he could hook into my boiler. He definately earned hero status with me.

My neighbor's house was in the 30s when the power came on. Another day and she would have started freezing up.

Generator for sure. Just big enough to run the furnace, well pump a few lights and the wife's hairdryer. Gotta keep her happy.
I wasn't sure how far the storm went north,Bruce.Thursday night before we lost power the news showed you guys getting it worse than us.I haven't been able to watch the news since then so I wasn't sure. My boat is fine, checked on it Sunday.
Still lots of people w/out that will most likely suffer frozen pipes if they haven't already.Only saving grace may have been that freak 60 degree day yesterday.I was trying to keep three buildings from freezing and only slept about 8 hours between 11pm Thurs. and this morning. A line crew that came all the way from Michigan fixed our lines today. Glad it's over.......finding some wood to knock on as we speak......

   Doc,

I was lucky enough to have heat.I had to drag my generator around town to some rental properties to run boilers for a few hours at a time.I thought I'd seen it all,but I got to one of our rentals and the tenants 80 year old mother is visiting for a few weeks and he went to work and left her sitting in the kitchen with a flashlight,a blanket and a fullsize outdoor propane grill burning in the middle of the room! I dialed up his cell phone after shutting the grill off(most likely saving her life)and was like " dooood,we need to talk when you get home". We left there and went to my father in laws apt. building and there's one of his tenants, sitting in the kitchen,with...you guessed it...a propane grill burning. When you see people die from that on the news, you think wow,who could be that dumb?Obviously way more people than we think.

I installed a whole house automatic generator on my home up in nothern Wisconsin. I was one of the people who was dupped into believing the whole country was going to shut down with the Y2K problem!!! My mother in law heard of the potential problem from a supposed computer expert friend, convinced my wife and of course from there you all know where the the idea went to!! Generators were real scarce and I ended up getting one out of California!! The worst though was installing it at the last minute. Renting a electric jack hammer to break up the frozen ground between the house and the generator! I must say that it has been used. Also, there's the piece of mind that the house won't freeze up with no one around.

That's on my christmas list Pete. Beleive it or not out here in farm land we have a very shallow water table and my sump pump runs quite a bit. I have a redundant battery backup but if I lose power for more than 8 hours I may as well get out my boots and start a bucket brigade, we get water even in freezing temps like we're having now. I've run cords from the motorhome into the house before and lived off of that generator for a while but if we're away when the power goes out we're swimming.

Pete, I gotta say it. Im very surprised...
My friends girlfriend which is an heir to International paper and attends all the Pagen fests, (hasnt worked a day in her life) very strange woman.... fell for that
converted her garage to a y2k shelter, all propane appliances, not cheap, 15k in solar panels, stand by generator and wired to kick when the power lets lose at 12:01
I wouldve loved to see her face at 12:01...yours too

That last big rain storm we had, my battery backup ran for 14 hours (continuous!) before the battery gave out. I got about a half inch of water in the basement before I was able to get a long jumper cable (made from a 100' extention cord) connected up between the truck and the battery back up.

For whole house generators, I do not recommend the smaller (less than 35kw) Generac! They buy no name off shore surplus engines and then put their own "Generac" label on them. The reliability scared me and then when it comes to getting engine parts, you are stuck with Generac. Their transfer switches are cheap but the method used is cheap too. Just barely meeting the NEC codes. They use contactors instead of a mechanical switch.

I ended up with a Kohler (and a Cutler Hammer switch) but there are plenty of other quality generators out there. generator joes
My Kohler is a 8.5 and it's really amazing what it will run. I installed a current transformer (donuts) and a amp meter on each leg so I could monitor the load. I'm just stating this so you don't end up getting more than you need. Fridge, sump pump, some lights, the furnace is really all you need. (Oh, the computer for CCfan!!!

Eric,
I really didn't fall for the Y2K, as mentioned, I was "forced" into it by mother in law! In my own mind, I really wanted a whole house back up anyway! Plus, it was a fun project for me!!!

yea we did have a little ice age that lasted for about 6hours, the kids loved it cause it was the first time they seen that white stuff.

But it was a pest for me cause walkin around in that white stuff in my rubber rain boots made my feet cold..

Now today , back in short sleeves and shorts with the a/c on.     love it

Peter, dont worry bout those gators they are your friend.
