Well as many of you probably figured they was no problem. The problem in fact was me. On the front of the trans, there is a plate that holds the front main seal. Well this plate can be turned 180 deg. It was the position of this front plate that controls the direction of the fluid flow. When I pulled the plate to knok out the old seal I failed to pay attention to the position of this plate. So the trans was actually in reverse when I was going forward. This caused the front gear to shear off some of the front housing. The trans instalation manual clearly states this information in the reference section of Correct Craft Fan on page four of the instalation manual. Check it out! This was a prime example of not paying attention to detail. This is just one of many lessons I will learn only being 21 years old. Hopfully you will also learn from my expensive mistake. Thanks for all your previous help!
"O" What trans fluid do I need to use??? -Brad- |

Bradley....Dexron II. Don't feel too bad, you're not the only one to make that mistake. In the long run, you'll be way ahead doing the work yourself and it's why a lot of us own these old boats.

when you are taking apart trasmissions and other complex assemblys buy a scratch engraver and write up > on the part so when you put it back together you won't have to guess. also, when any transmission seal leaks allways check the bushing that centers the part being sealed. a bushing is a sleave bearing. if the bushing is worn you need a rebuild. transmissiion patch jobs cost more rapidly later. you had better get that metal you made out of it also, as this will grind up the rest of your trans in rapid order. if you're near atlanta bring it by my shop and i'll look at it for you for free. you're starting out the same way i did; so go for it. there's big money in fixing transmissions and the industry needs techs.

brad or anyone else in the atlanta area or anyone that needs trans advice don't hesitate to call me at cottman trans 404 6338144. transmissions are a very speacialized field that requires a lot of training. if you want to be a do it yourselfer, be wary that you don't end up needing more parts than you started out needing. we call that training in the business. the 2 parts that make you really remember next time are when you have to buy more parts and when you have to redo the job for free.
