I have an 1980 ski nautique, it has been at an interior shop since last winter and when I took it to him it ran great now is a different story.
I can not get the boat to fire, i have replaced the battery, coil, dis. cap, and still no fire from coil to cap. the only thing I can think of is some sort of 40 amp circuit breaker that could be bad. PLEASE HELP ASAP! |

When you say you have no fire from the coil to the dizzy, Did you pull the high tension wire from the center of the cap and hold it a little ways from an engine ground to check for any spark?
Do you have power to the Pos. side of the coil? |

Points are know to corrode especially if stored in damp areas (covered/tarped) boat.

Yes there is power to the pos side of the coil.... but when I take a screwdriver and try to watch for a spark on the coil wire to the dizzy there is no spark what so ever?? There is about 2 or 3 gallons of gas in the boat, How much needs to be in there?? also alot of this gas was from last year..... OK easy guys know that the old gas prolly needs to be changed but just trying to see if it would at least fire over... any more inputs guys and thanks for the help....... |

Josh, Yes, the points are the ground for the coil. With bad points then the circuit to the coil isn't closed. In basic terms, the coil reaches a saturation ("charges") when this circuit is closed, then when the points open this "charge" creates the high tension spark and it goes to the distributor. Go for points and condenser. Do you have a dwell meter? It's best to set the points but a feeler gauge to just set the gap has been used for years. Then check the timing. You'll need a timing light. If the gas doesn't smell sour, then just fill up the tank with premium. EDIT: The points are in the distributor under the cap unless you're asking where to buy them?? You can get them at a auto supply. If you're asking where the points are on the engine then I need to be blunt here: Get some help from someone who may have installed points. It's not difficult but keep a eye on how it's done so you can do it next time. |
