    Posted: July-09-2009 at 8:30pm
I have a slow transmission leak in my 82 2001. In my attempts I can not tell if the fluid is leaking out the front or back of the transmission. It leaks enough that I add a splash of fluid everytime I put gas in it.

What do I need to do?

Slacker option: Keep checking the fluid and fix it when winter comes.
1/2 slacker option: If it is leaking out the back try to fix it in the boat.

Best option that would have my boat out of commission for a while: Take the tranny all the way out of the boat and try to fix it.

Thanks
Jon

there's no way you could fix it without taking it out, no serious way at least.
If it's not dripping enough on one outting that it will end empty on middle of the day, and you constantly keep an eye on it yes it could last until winter... and maybe not.

Anyway, Fantastic Finish Marine can have it repaired in no time and you will be on the water before you missed it.

Where do these things usually start leaking at?

Is it something that I can fix myself? I am pretty mechanical and know a great place to get advice(thanks CCF)?

it is something you can fix yourself... but it is very likely to break on itself again... unless you've already done a few.

Sure Eric will chime in soon and give you all the tips.

Jon,
Seals can leak for several reasons. It's usually caused by other problems than just getting old. I'd guess it's the front seal that's the problem on yours. Pump problems will cause front seal leakage. Lots have tried just replacing the seal only to find it leak again. I too suggest sending the trans to Eric. It being a 82, the hours on the trans may be getting up to the point where it neds a compete rebuild.

WOW Thanks for the bad news. New questions

Should I run it until it gernades inside or if I do something now instead of when it totally quits could it save me money or keep me from doing additional damage to the engine?

What does a rebuild cost?

Eventhough it is not the news that I wanted thanks for the advice.

if you want my honest opinion, im the type to keep adding oil till she blows, thats me though... 650 to 750 seeing alot of mid 80's tranny's lately....more hnestly, you need to get that tranny out right now before it blows! lol

What??? Honestly how do you know when it is right before it blows?

Thanks for the info Eric. If possible I would like to try and just add oil though the summer and then have it fixed right this winter. If it blows will it do any additional damage?

just to your ego, it has to come out anyways, the shaft may be pitted and probably has to be taken all the way apart anyways. summer is short and oil is cheap

Thanks Eric

Sounds like I will get to talk to you again later.

I am sure you are a great guy but not really looking forward to it.

Jon, I've adding oil into mine for last 2 years and around 200hours of use, many of them boarding and it hasnt slipped once... just yet.

I just cant find the money to rebuild the damn thing but I'd do it without hesitating if I could. Therefore I check the oil before taking it out and before any long cruise or pulling session. It seems the drip rate on mine depends on the load the transmission handles.
I carry 2 Dexron III bottles onboard all the times by the way.

By the way, Eric is a great guy, you just have to get used to his sense of humor.

That is good to hear. The only time I have had mine slip was when it was low the first time and I hadnt checked it. It has not slipped when it is full of oil.

I like eric's sense of humor. I like you just dont know where the money is going to come from to fix this thing.

That is an interesting business plan.

I read the other thread about you going to aruba and got to thinking. I can offer you some a week in my dads vacation house in Kansas. :)
