Hey guys,
I need to pull the motor out of the Mustang in a few weeks to replace the rear main seal. While it is out, I would like to clean it up and touch up the paint. I have looked a little at a couple brands. One is dupli-color, but they have "Ford Blue" and "Dark Ford Blue" another is a Krylon paint at Virginia Classic Mustang where I get stuff occasionally for Mrs Wakeslayer's convertible. They just have "Corporate Blue" Any opinions on engine paints in general and what the correct color is? Also, open to suggestions and advice on the process. I am going to clean it the best I can by hand, and then paint the engine, bellhousing, and trans. The engine is in pretty good shape, but the bellhousing looks like crap. Trans is ok at best. thanks Mike |

It was from when we were installing it, wanted to see how close to 12* it was pre-aligned. It is just sitting there.

Mike, here's the Ford dark blue I used on mine
Bill Hirsch On the cast surfaces, it's brush painted, with no brush marks but the parts like the bellhousing and regular steel parts I thinned and spray painted. They do sell aerosol cans, but I have no experence with them. You seem to have the Ford light blue |

Mike,
Besides the nice job Gary has done to his engine, the second thing I noticed was a couple of "surplus" wire ties!!! And black UV resistant too!! |

Want to revive this thread but with a different engine. Does anybody know what the older engines used for color. Specifically an early 60's (still have not determined if its a 63 or 64) Ford 312 Interceptor (see picture). I am wondering if this is the Ford Green (Duplicolor DE1617 or VHT SP131), or if either Eaton Corp, Dearborn/Interceptor or Correct Craft resprayed them? The Chrysler Green (Duplicolor DE1619) is also pretty close. Any thoughts?

Steve,
There's a whole thread on the Interceptor engine color. I'll see if I can find it. Bruce(Riley) got pretty damn close but of course I can't remember what he used. The color Steve (62wood) used I feel has too much green it it. Reid found some that was custom mixed for his 390. All the colors you mention I feel have too much green in them too. It's closer to the 1608 GM blue. The Interceptor paint is there own color and was sprayed on after they marinized their engines. CC never resprayed them. |

Thanks Pete, I was thinking those colors might be to green, but thought if I could find one locally, I'd try it and see. I stopped at Farm and Fleet and also my local auto parts store, neither had it. They did however offer to mix up a custom paint and put it in a can. So I think I may go that route.
I picked up an extra set of carbs and intake manifold, which I am going to rebuild and keep spares - first one is disassembled and through the ultra-sonic cleaner, waiting for a rebuild kit. This is a first for me (with anything other then snowmobile carbs) so I am treading in new water. Also need to paint the rebuilt fuel pump back to the blue (its now a marine gray, it looks good but I think it needs to go back to the blue). If you do find that thread (searched but forget to go to the advanced search) I would like to give it a read through. |

Or was it this one, where the guy actually talked to someone from Eaton
Engine Paint Schemes Posted by Glasspar: "I spoke with the guys at Interceptor today. The guy I talked with said that most of the early 312's and 289's were painted "Detroit Diesel Green" and were shipped that way from Interceptor to Correct Craft. Early in the mid 60's (what would that be.... 64, 65??) 289's may have been in his words "the old blue". I searched the web and found this link: http://www.duplicolor.com/products/engine.html That site shows these colors of paint available: DE 1618 Detroit Diesel Alpine & DE 1617 Ford Green, DE 1621 Old Ford Blue He asked about the carbs on my engine. They are carter side draft carbs, and most of our conversation was about the problems those carbs have spilling fuel into the bilge. Nice guy, and fun to talk to. " I may try and call and see if I can still get in touch with "Earl" |
