This past weekend, I used oven cleaner to remove 98% of the paint. The 2% is mostly the paint that was under the pinstripe sticker.
It doesnt want to come off for anything? What do I need to do to prep the area for paint? I am just painting the stripe. ie. wetsand or ??? Also I was thinking of going back with the same type of rusteoleum paint that they used? Where do I get this? Opinions? I am having a friend that paints motorcycles, actually do the spraying. Do we use a primer? Do I need to spray on a clearcoat? Help any infomoration would be great. |

Jason-
My two cents...If your still planning to tape off the old "ski nautique" then I think you can paint it w/o applying a primer. If you rub your fingers accross the old lettering You'll notice that you can feel a slight ridge where the old stencil was. If you can feel it, you'll definitely see it if you spray over it w/0 a primer. If your going to spray over the old script (faded into the gelcoat), then definitely apply a primer first. Either way you'll want to make sure the hull is super clean and smooth. If you come accross any scuffs or scratches you can wetsand them until their flush. Everyone I've talked with has suggested Immron or Awlgrip. If you use one of these you won't need a clearcoat. That's enough..I feel like I just wrote a term paper. |

I always use awlgrip. I would use awlcraft 2000, it's a little easier to work with than awlgrip or awlgrip2. If you final sand with 400 you should be fine to paint without priming. I would'nt go any finer.
