That would be your voltage regulator.
Welcome! If you can accurately describe your problem, there are many here who can help troubleshoot. |

Bob,
Welcome to CCfan. Just as Tim (TRBeng) mentioned, we have lots here on the site that can help you out but more info is needed. Number one is when you state it won't start, do you mean the engine won't crank/turn over with the starter or it won't fire up/run? |

It's the fetser valve. What you need is some gauze pads and 3-in-1 oil.

Will a board strecher work on that part?

Come on guys!! You're going to give Bob the wrong impression!
Bob, Don't worry about the above comments. We do still need a better description of whats going on with the no start problem. |

Talk about a lively site, this is great. I have a 83 with a 351 commander engine. We have owned the boat for 22 years. We were going to winterize it,when the problem occured. The battery had been removed and charged, and as soon as it was connected the starter began turning over the engine and the egnition switch was off. We had to take the batt cable off to shut her down. I thought it was a bad switch so I replaced it,tested the battery and it was ok.I had the starter checked out and it also is fine.the only thing that has not been changed out or tested it the regulator and the resistor... any thoughts..Thanks Bob

Bob,
Check out your other post "no start" Get a volt/ohm meter and start doing the recommended checks. If the engine turns over without any power to the solenoids coil, then the contacts inside are welded together. This will happen with a weak battery and or bad battery cables/connections. How did you test the battery? The only true way is to load test it. That's a specific meter. The voltage regulator and the ballast resistor have nothing to do with the problem you describe. |

Bob,
Did you confirm you are getting power from the ignition switch to the ballast resistor. If you are, but then nothing to the coil, then test the resistor. |

Bob,
The resistors will get hot and the reason they are a ceramic type. Did you ever get a volt/ohm meter? It's really needed to check the resistor. There should be a ohm value printed on it so by disconnecting the wiring you can check the resistance. Volts should be around 9 on the output side. |

Pete: I want to thank you for the advise on my starting problem. The low battery caused the solenoid to stick, allowing thr engine to turn over with the ignition off. We replaced the battery, solenoid and ballast resistor....she started on the first try. Thanks again Bob in Wichita..
