A few days ago, my old PC laptop got a virus and we had to take the old operating system off reload the software onto it. In the process, I lost my iTunes with over 3000 songs on it. The iPod still has all the songs on it, and I want to get them loaded back into iTunes.
I went to the Apple store at the mall today, and they do not have any programs that will do this. They suggested looking online for some third party transfer software. Thought I would see if anybody on here has been in the same dilema and how you solved it. |

3000 songs is one hell of an investment! I thought Apple offered some sort of back-up for a minimal cost, but I guess that dosen't help ypu now. I'm going too look at backing mine up. If you find something please let us know.

Apple makes it VERY easy to download from iTunes to your iPod, BUT, it is virtually impossible to save the music you have already invested in to try to recover it and put it back on iTunes. From what I have read, they have concerns regarding illegal swaps, transfers, etc.
From the research I have done, I think many/all of the third party software providers that sell backup utility software, are bascially scammers. I have read all sorts of great raves from the mfg, then when you read the real users reviews, its basically a ripoff. I have also done some searches online and found that all you need is a computer, iTunes, and your iPod, and there is a way to do it. I haven't figured it out quite all the way yet, but, I am working on it. I am a little afraid to to try anything because if I lose the music, its gone. Well, sort of....I did buy an external hard drive a few years back, and it is all on there, but, not very well managed...ie...many duplicates, etc. |

Here is the written version of one way to back up without a third party software.
iPod Backup Same basic thing explained on you tube. you tube backup process If anybody knows a better way to back up your iPod, I would really like to hear about it. |

itunes makes it easy to do, you need to "transfer the purchases" from your ipod to the new computer. Load itunes onto your new machine, log into itunes as usual plug in your ipod, "authorize a new computer" (up to 5)It will ask if you want to transfer the purchases.
We just went through this a couple of weeks ago, its really pretty easy ( I managed to do it!) If you lose the songs and purchased them through itunes, they may authorize you to download them again for free (you will only get them back if they a currently are available in itunes). Call apple customer service. I had to do this to get back songs that were in the library, but not on any ipods at the time of the crash. |

This is why everyone should have a backup system in place. external Hard drives are cheap insurance.... everyone should have one. or check into an online service like Mozy.com or Carbonite. this is especially important with laptops since laptop drives have a higher rate of failure than the larger 3.5" drives. |

Appriceate the advice, however, Apple may make it easy if you have purchased the songs from them through iTunes. However, only a few of mine were purchased from Apple. Most were CD's imported into iTunes. They don't support those. Thats where this process gets complicated.
I am doing some experimenting on importing songs from my backup external hard drive. Its working, but, it will be a slow and tedious process. |

FYI for Mac users (might help you PC guys as well)
I used a program called Senuti (iTunes bacerds) when I got my last Mac. It was free, and much easier than trying to copy/convert all the stuff from the old PC to the Mac. It just copied everything into a file that I then moved into itunes. I liked the idea of having something between my iPod and iTunes to keep me from accidentally destroying everything on the iPod or I would have used David's way. If you have stuff that you purchased from the iTunes store then you should be able to get that back from them, but you have to remember what is was, I haven't seen anything that keeps that list for you. |

I used the same instructions davidg listed above and was able to transfer from my ipod to computer. I have close to 400 songs and only 1 was purchased. I have it all on my home pc and 30Gig classic. I was able to transfer to laptop and loaded it on my sisters pc to get her started. The only problem I ran into was the music folder on the pc was hidden. Once you unhide that it works great.

This is not a solution to the problem, but for future prevention.
I keep redundant external drives. One for pictures and data, and I have one drive that is just "My Music" I also keep a master drive in my shop that I back up everything a couple times per year. including the iTunes controller file that tells the program where everything is located and such. With respect to the external drive you have, it should not be too difficult to clean up 4000 songs. You can display duplicates and delete those. |

As mentioned before by others on this thread, if you haven't backed everything up on an external hard-drive, it is WELL worth it to spend a few bucks and do it. I have recovered ~95% of my songs due to the fact I did back up to an external h-d. However, I am still looking for a program to duplicate my iPod in the exact format its in right now.
I found some software downloads from a popular software download site. Haven't tried any of them yet, but, thought I would share what I have found so far. Software Download Site |
