I have an 89' SN 2001. I Bought it in 1990 and it is ready for a restoration. When I purchased the boat orginallly, the accent stripe on the side was painted over. I would like to repair the stripe, but don't know the best way to do it. Should I somehow remove the paint and then wet sand the orginal gel coat? or just repaint what is all ready there? Any suggestions would be greatly apppreciated.

Welcome aboard!

Have you looked around to see what might be underneath the paint(chips or a small spot to sand)? I ask because someone in the past may have shot a 'good look' on it or they might have been trying to cover up something.

Do whatever you can to stay with gel. Paint I think has a short life on a boat that will be used as intended.

I have looked closely at the current paint. It looks as if it was done just brigten up the stripe and not to cover over some other damage. Is it possible to use some kind of chemcial paint stripped to remove the paint and not damage the gel coat underneath?
