I am a new owner of a 1989 Nautique 2001. Picked it up in January and am just getting it serviced at a local dealer. I had them check everything over and they say the strut is slightly bent and wearing the shaft slightly. I have read on some old posts and see that some say a slight bend may be normal. Is this correct? The posts were not from CCF, just a generic google search on "bent strut nautique". Anybody know for sure. Thanks.

Rob,
The strut shouldn't be bent but more important is the strut/shaft/engine alignment. Did they do it when you had it in for service?

Welcome to CCfan. Get some pictures and a short story to Keith so he can put it up in the diaries.

Rob - Don't let the shop repair it by bending it back while it is mounted on the boat. That could crack the fiberglass. I have heard of some shops doing this. The strut on my boat was bent & I found cracks on both inside & outside the hull from the hit it took. I repaired those so they would not propagate.

Good luck, post some photos!

Thanks for the info. I did go ahead and have them put a new strut on. No Cracks in the hull. I just had it out on the water today in between Easter get togethers and it drove out Great!! Looking forward to a great summer. Here is a link to a couple of pics hopefully they show up. I have not done this before. Thanks again!

Hey all, New member here. I came across this forum and wanted to know if just replacing the strut will do the trick? I just came out of the water and hit something big and my strut is slightly bent to the right. I see rojen2001 just replaced the strut. Did you have any issues afterwards. I hope I don't have to replace the shaft as well? How do you know if you do?

Sandy,
If the strut is bent, then you will feel a bind when turning the prop shaft. (or you have a alignment problem) You can also measure from each chine to the prop shaft at the strut to confirm the bend. For the shaft, you should use a dial indicator clamped to the strut The max TIR is .003" You will also want to remove the prop and measure for the max .003 on the prop taper as close to the prop shaft nut as possible. If the strut is bent, then many have had good luck having it straightened. Some prop shops can do it or a machine shop with a hydraulic press. Report back with what you find and we'll go from there.

Sandy,
I'm curious as to what boat you have. You didn't mention it and the only potential indicator is the 64 in your screen name. We always enjoy pictures so if you have some, post them.

I have an 89 2001. just bought it three weeks ago. Was on the lake today and hit something big. When i trailered it I could tell the strut was bent slightly to the right. It is visible enough.
BTW you guys really know your stuff. I have been reading these forums on some issues the boat has and ya'll seem spot on on how to fix them. I often wonder if ya'll are all mechanics. Unfortunately I am not the mechanically inclined, though I want to learn to take care of "The Betty" (that is what my wife named her) myself. I guess it is just a matter of digging in and learning.
I will post a pic soon. She sems like a good ole girl, just needs some tlc. The oil pressure is running high, even in idle and may replace the oil pressure sending unit to see if that helps. It also needs a depthfinder, new tach, and a couple of other things, but man she runs strong. I am looking forward to putting her back in shape.

Sandy,
No, we're not mechanics just boat owners. However, most of us do have some time put into boats and boating.

Welcome to CCfan. Enjoy the site and most of all enjoy the time out on the water.

Post a picture of the strut looking forward.

Sure looks bent to me. You can pull the strut off and sent it off to a shop and have it straightened — or you can spring for a new strut. Since you’re new to the CCF site, do some searches on bent struts. You’ll have plenty of reading material. Don’t forget to do a shaft alignment and check for shaft straightness after the strut repairs.

Yes, it's bent.

Thanks guys. Yea I was thinking of buying a new strut and putting it on myself. Does anyone have a recommendation on where to get older Nautique parts? AND not being highly mechanically inclined is this a fairly easy project? Or just break down and have a mechanic do it?

SkiDIM is a good source.

You will need new cutlass bearings & also packing material for the shaft gland.

That strut took a hard hit, so the shaft could be bent too.

I agree....if strut is that bent, a good chance your shaft is bent as well, even if you can't see it with your eye. I'd remove the shaft and check for straightness, since you are having to replace the strut anyway...you may find, you'll need a new shaft as well.
