I have a 84 2001 SN with the Commander- Windsor? 351 and am wanting to replace the carb this summer. I have decided to stay with Holly, but is there a little bit bigger one or any thing new out there that I should do instead, or just go with stock size. And where is the best place to purchase, SKIDIM? Thanks for your help.

Have you done any performance mods or upgrades? If not the Commander was rated at around 240hp.

What Jody is alluding to above is stick with the stock carb. Unless you've done other mods, a bigger carb isn't going to give you any advantages. In fact, it may create more problems@

CFM = (RPM times CID) / 3456
Commonly people over carb anyway.
Commander 351 turning (est) 4900Rpm

4900 X 351 / 3456 = 497.65CFM
Hope my math is right

There's also a derate for volumetric efficiency, I think 75% for a stock motor. So the 600 CFM stock carb is plenty for a 351 CID engine.

Jody, i like that formula, but it means that most of the small block motors are a little over carbed to begin with.

Thanks you guys, I think I will stick with the 600 CFM-Stock set up. and switch to an electronic ignition and get rid of the points, is this a good idea. Thanks for all the advice.

Again their are a couple of us here on this web site that are PCM Vendors and can get you as good a price as (Ahemm)DIM or better for your PCM Parts needs.

I think that most stock configured motors are over carbed a bit from go.

Their is a book called super tuning and modifying Holley Carburetors ByDave Emanuel. This is A great source for learning about the Holleys how to tune them for your application. I used to reference this book quite regulary when I was doing a lot of Carb work and just recently dug it out because I am tuning a 77 Chevy pickup with a 4010 carb on it (great carb by the way for street useage).
Get a copy it is worth it and interesting reading if you are a motor head!!

I am ready to purchase a carb and the electronic ignition parts. I have the 351 Commander or is it the 351 Windsor. Either way let me know who to contact for ordering what is needed to pull all of this off. Thanks a lot for all of the advise, I am not a mechanic, so I need to know everything necessary to get this conversion done. Thank You this site and the guys on it ROCK!!!!

Commander is the company that marinized your Ford engine. Ford made two versions of the 351. One made in their Cleveland plant and the other in Windsor. The Windsor versions are the ones marinized.

What's up with the carb? How about just rebuilding the old one?

Its been rebuilt before and I still have a hesitation problem when hammering out of the whole and I am so tired of it that I was ready to just try a new carb! I am no mechanic and out here in Montana can't seem to find anyone that can seem to fix it. It is fine in the shop, but when pullin a skier out it hesitates and i'm over it? It may not even be the carb I am just out of options.

If you choose to rebuild the carb, check your points, they could be bad which you made need a tuneup.. Chris on here is king on tune-ups.. There are some posts from the guys on here how to tune properly.

Normally I would first guess a hestiate or any kinda burp, carb problems are there. But you never know..

I spent 4 years in Montana and although it was a few years ago, one thing was never a lack of decent mechanics. I wonder what happened?? For a carb rebuild (as well as other engine repairs), you do not need a "marine" mechanic!!

Didn't we review the problem once? Sure sounds like a accelerator pump problem and not ignition system related.

yes, this has been an on going problem, I can't seem to to get it fixed. Maybe I should be replacing the accelerator pump. I have a mechanic, but he recommended I switch to an Edlebrock carb and I got riddled on this site for even considering that. I build houses and don't even know where the accelerator pump is. I just want my boat to run good. I am willing to try anything and the less I spend the better.

When you look down the throat of the carb and you advance the accelerator, you should see a squirt of gas. That's the pump working giving the engine gas when it's needed.

I'd really question a mechanic who only knows how to work on one brand of carb. The holly is not the problem - think about how many are running them on this site alone!! Being blunt here but it's not a new carb you need but rather a new mechanic!!

I Grew Up in Bigfork Montana lived right on Flathaed lake.

A lot of boat shops can just about sell you a new Carb for what we can rebuild your old one for. Most carb rebuilds now a day's are done by the owner do it your selfer. I get 2 hours to rebuild plus parts. I always put a new metering block in and other various small mods plus a re-new kit well that comes out to around $300 after tax and not much of a warranty. At least at $460 for a new one I can give one year on a warranty. most all my customers take the new and spend the extra $160.00 one year piece of mind and the fact it is new.

Here is something that you need to know! Do not under any cirmstance put non Marine (automotive), Non Ignition protected parts under the enclosed motor box.
That includes Starters, Alternators,Carbs, distributors and fuel pumps.

Beautiful country and I wished at one time I could have stayed. I went out to continue my degree at Montana State. Spent 3 years there, graduated and then carpentered at Chet Huntley's Big Sky for a year. Construction being so seasonal back then, I would have had to find a ranchers daughter to marry to stay!!

With the mechanics, I had plenty of classmates in power mechanics that literally grew up fixing their own equipment on the ranch. They were teaching the professor!!

I live in Whitefish. FL Inboards- If you have a good mechanic you could recommend to me I would really appreciate it. I like my guy because he is cheap and works on everything from a weed eater to Tractors and my truck and boat. He doesn't only know one carb he just said he prefers Edlebrock carbs, this worried me a bit because I want to keep the boat the way they have worked for years. When a new carb is put on does that replace the accelerator pump or is that another part to replace? I wish I was in Florida and could bring over a case of beer and have one of you boat surgeons have a listen or go for a ride! Thanks you guys, I will fix this problem this summer for sure!
